Vodacom boosts cellphone Internet access

Argh.. and there I was hoping there was something wrong with my phones browser!

So THATS what that retarded header/footer stuff is. Whilst browsing an ALREADY OPTIMISED FOR MOBILE site, I now see this silly Vodafone live! logo and navigation... thing... sandwiching the content. I'm actually quite irrate about this change.

My cellphone browser already handles normal HTML pages well, I don't need you to "automagically" ruin it for me, Vodacom, thanks... you can please either remove this technology, or give me an option to disable it.

Or just use opera browser mini.

I really like it. There are two different ways to view web pages with opera mini.

The default lets you see the full webpage and you can zoom in where you want, the second, the one I use, changes the format of the website to make it immensely easy to browse.

or edit the data connection you are using to browse and remove the proxy and url entries. make a copy before editing if you have to use the old connection settings !!

The re-rendering happens if you browse via the Vodacom proxy server.

If you have a 'proper' browser on your device, you don't need the redering, so remove the proxy setting from your phone's setup. It will allow you to browse directly onto the internet and also bypass the reformatting.

The Symbian browser on my N81 offers no such setting, in either the browser settings, or the connection settings. I don't suppose you'd be able to tell me where I could find this setting then?

Only reason I haven't been using Opera mini, is not for lack of trying, but battling to get it to run. I'll definitely try and reintalling when I get a chance if I have to suffer through this much longer.

I can find the settings, but I can't remove them :(

They just keep coming back. I can't use Opera either cos it is subject to the same connection with the same proxy.

VODACOM, please take this junk away!

@Vie I blogged about this yesterday, the settings for your N81 should be identical to my N95.

@Garyvdh If I'm not mistaken, using Opera Mini sites are routed through their own proxy, which does something similar to what Vodacom is claiming and then compresses the pages and forwards them on, these pages don't seem to include the rubbish banner.

Wow, this is the most retarded change I've ever seen.

On my 7250i they insert a link called "OpenWeb home" on every page! What the... and the link isn't even valid.

Also saw that (on my TyTN II), it should not be there at all. Have reported it, so they'll fix it.

Don't you want to PM the exact phone model and version of OS you're running?

It's one thing to advocate it but then why wont vodacom let me use a "proper browser" on my Blackberry's data plan?

I thought you could use anything as long as it was used on the blackberry itself? Or doesn't Opera etc. use the blackberry apn?
