Hi all, I want to know if anybody else is suffering this absolute extortion from Vodacom. Sorry for the long rant, but need to get it all out of my system.
Been a Vodacom customer for almost 20 years. I have never, ever, ever in my life had to pay an extra R10 per month to "unlock" the "service" of being able to identify who is phoning me. Truecaller doesn't work, every single number shows up as either "hidden number" or "unknown number", even contacts that are saved on my phone. I can never identify who is calling, and irritatingly cannot block the innumerable telemarketers who call me because one cannot block an unknown number.
Asked the sales agent at Vodacom why every number comes up as unknown or hidden, answer is a shrug of the shoulders and a "go to Hillcrest branch and ask them." Hillcrest told me I had to pay the R10 extra per month, despite me never ever ever having had to pay it previously.
I was forced to move my own number to Cell C for a short period as Vodacom refused to allow me more than one contract (pls note, I now have FOUR contracts with Vodacom ...???) but my daughter's phone was always on Vodacom and we have never had the problem of not being able to identify who was calling. This is a new thing that happened when I RENEWED the contract with Vodacom and we upgraded our phones. Now, on ALL FOUR contracts that I pay for, nobody can identify who is calling.
I reported this to Vodafone as I see this is absolute extortion, and the fraud investigations unit phoned me today (I think that's where she said she's calling from). She says this R10 per month has been around for years and because I ported my number back from Cell C to Vodacom now I don't have the number identification service. I asked her to explain to me why then this is happening on my daughter's phone, which has always been a Vodacom phone and wasn't ported to or from anywhere, but the incredibly rude woman kept interrupting me and carrying on about my number being ported and the box for identifying numbers not being ticked. I've just checked an old invoice, and there is no R10 per month for this service. A bit of research shows that prepaid customers get this service for free. Why do prepaid customers get this preferential treatment? Is it because Vodacom can't dock it off their bank accounts every month? My main query is, we have had contracts for YEARS and this R10 per month thing has only raised its despicable head in the last couple of months when I RENEWED the contract.
I mean, I know Vodacom has to pony up and pay Makate, but do they have to extort money out of us in order to do it? Has anybody else heard about this R10 per month thing?

To add to my thread, no other telecoms service provider charges customers for number identification. Why does Vodacom think they can get away with this?

Sorry to say but dealing with MTN is as bad.

I had it last year while trying to cancel a contract and I swore I would never sign another contract.

This year I was lured in with a sweet deal and had to fight for 4 months and spend time and money trying to resolve a billing issue that was totally a fault on their side.

It seems the only way to have a stress-free experience is to go prepaid.

After 15 years I left Vodacom about 10 years ago, could not be happier to be rid of those clowns.
Just wait, that R10/month will become R30 soon.

It's called CLI..And yes I have the same gripe as you..prepaid don't get charged but contract do..you'd think they would want to look after their contract clients

Vodacom contract subscribers always paid for CLIP, nothing new.

Im with Vodacom and prepaid. What service are you talking about?
contract subscribers pay R10 p/m to see what number is calling them. It’s called CLIP (caller line identification presentation). Not applicable to prepaid subscribers.

it's interesting my wife gets charged the 10 buck CLIP on her contract and I don't never have been.
We both on red contracts, have never found answer as why it is the case, I think I just pick up the free CLIP and its just stuck with me form contract to contract.

On side note one of my Vodacom contracts a few years ago had 1GB free each month for first three months.
it never stopped I got a free gig every month for 24 months, marked as "promo" data. I never complained why would I.

Had to google what that is. Never heard of it until now.

To the OP, I totally understand your frustration with Vodacom’s inconsistency.

However unfair it is for them to charge contract subscribers for it and not prepaid subscribers, the cost have been around since I can remember (think almost 30 years - I just know I have been paying for that since I got my first contract in 1997, so it is not something new).

If you weren’t charged for it previously, you are very lucky. But there is not really anything you can do about it, don’t let it upset you so much!

As I said, it’s nothing new. Been around for ages.

It will show up as CLIP on your invoice.

This.

Has been for years across all telcos.

Hold up a moment here....
I last had a cellphone contract in 2014. Back then yes, we had to pay for it, it was called CLIP. Basically the cellphone cartels taking contract customers for a p03s. Since I went prepaid never had that again. So it's 2024 and greedy cartels are still doing it. What's new?

And I might add... it costs them nothing. They're basically charging you for something that is sent across their precious networks anyways. Because they can, and because all cellphone networks are mader chod
True…it is extortion, but not NEW extortion as the OP suggests
