Voda 3G been very consistent for me lately and quicker than ever too....

Voda speedtest...

Download Speed: 2730 kbps (341.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 346 kbps (43.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Although international still has its issues...

Just down loaded a 16mb file using orbit in 54seconds. I have to say that is pretty sensational considering...

And a 54mb file in under 3 minutes, that's at a speed of 307kBps... That is very impressive IMO...

I agree - Voda 3G looking much better 2day.

No disconnects so far (been connected for 2hrs now) and this is in parow where I normally have a very poor signal (2bars) .... today it's been on 3 bars since i've logged on....

speedtest.net results:
DL: 1873 kb/s
UL: 311 kb/s

So things are finally looking good...

I have been trying for 6 months to use 3G as my main internet connection at home, it is not making the grade and is far to intermittent and unreliable.
Today almost everything times out, then for a few minutes I have blitz speeds which then revert to nothingness and disconnections again.

Yesterday afternoon I tried (can't remember the exact TOD sorry): performance was abysmal, and 75% of pings to smtp.vodacom.co.za were lost. Went back to ADSL!

But late last night it was good. Currently on HSDPA, and it's singing.
Ping statistics for 196.11.146.149:
Packets: Sent = 368, Received = 368, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 88ms, Maximum = 602ms, Average = 115ms

Voda has never been consistent for me and I've had it for just over a year now. About 2 months ago I went DSL with cybersmart and there's no comparison but just lately Voda has surprised me with the speed!!!

I find the latency of Voda intrusive when browsing the net and downloading email isn't as quick as it should be but what impressed me this morning was the speed at which files were DL using orbit down load manager, averaging around 300kBps. My DSL line sometimes doesn't get that but generally is consistently around the 360kBps mark...

Voda speed test...

Download Speed: 2749 kbps (343.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 176 kbps (22 KB/sec transfer rate)

Seriously impressive IMO

From my side it appears that the problem's been solved. Getting good speeds and latency now. Big up to the guys who worked around the clock to sort it out. :)

Regarding the error messages I posted about here, which I've been getting on and off since 2008/07/19.

I'm fairly sure these messages are coming from Vodacom's proxy server, although no-one has confirmed or denied this. I have suggested to them to make the source of the message clearer, but this seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

This error seems to be a general error message from the proxy; the proxy was busy, it was unable to resolve the hostname of the website, it was unable to reach the website, the page contains improperly formatted HTML, etc.

If you see this message, try refreshing the page. If a whole website becomes unavailable for an extended period then report that you are unable to access that particular website on 155. The report will get to the right people who can bypass the proxy for that site.

Let me know if anyone outside the Cape area gets this message. Think it's Cape-specific and we should have a clearer picture on a fix for this by tomorrow.

As per usual ginggs is spot-on...;)

Can you confirm that this message does come from Vodacom's proxy server? ;)

Thought I did, but yes. They're using a newer, different brand proxy in the Cape and the messages is coming from it. The other proxies around the country are still the original type.

Not sure if the planned changes happen tonight, so please check if the error message still pops up.

When did they change the proxy server in the Cape?

BTW, I have not had any throughput problems the last two days.

I still got some web pages that failed to load, showing error messages similar to that shown by others. What I found is that the error messages comes up almost instantly after clicking a link. It is so fast that it is almost like the proxy server does not even try to contact the upstream web server. Clicking on refresh or clicking on back and then clicking the link again resolves the problem.

Would someone in Cape Town and someone outside of Cape Town please try visiting the following site: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ and report your results?

On Vodacom I'm getting the following:
An error has been encountered in accessing this page.

1. Server: azureus.sourceforge.net
2. URL path: /
3. Error notes: File does not exist: /home/groups/a/az/azureus/htdocs/
4. Error type: 404
5. Request method: GET
6. Request query string:
7. Time: 2008-08-09 12:27:17 PDT (1218310037)
On another network I get (along with the rest of the page):
Welcome to the hi-res torrent world of Vuze,
formerly known as Azureus.

Same frog, new name.

Why so slow recently

Hi Vodacom,

Download speeds seems to have degraded in Pretoria East over the last 2 weeks. I have done some tests and where I usually got proper HSDPA throughput (1.4mbps), for the last few weeks I am stuck at 3G speeds (~400kbps) and it is not getting better. Skype calls for example is mess and just times out after a few seconds of the call being initialized...wazz up?

(BTW: I have a high gain antenna installed, I have line of site to a tower and my 3G data card report a signal of -51dbm.... )

Thanks!

Loads fine here (Vista; Opera; internet apn).
Thanks Saule. I've tried on XP, Ubuntu and Firefox, also on internet APN. Unfortunately I'm not provisioned for the unrestricted APN, I believe it bypasses Vodacom's proxy server, it would be useful for testing.

Thursday evening at about 11:06pm, 3G signal just vanishes. Tonight, at exactly 11:06pm, it happens again!

Dashboard showed MTN-SA 3G Roaming.

Upon searching for available networks, not even 2G was found!

*Gordon's Bay, Harbour Island
*internet APN
*PPDB
