Hi there
From my experience please don't try and use http://speed.vodacom.co.za/ I think its a con. Use the speed tests found on MyBroadband.co.za Sentech's and Ibursts give similar results. You'll find huge discrepencies to your vodacom tests.
P.S. You can only do Sentech's once, unless you remove the file.
Thanx Iam3GThe highest i peak at was about 1800+ kbps. It could have been 1900+ dont really remember, as i knew that it was just wishfull thinking **deep sigh**
Thanx Iam3G
What modem/device are you using? USB modem, DataCard or Cellphone?
I'm trying to establish whether my Samsung U700 has a limitation.
It should be able to download at 3.6mbps according to the phone specs, but I know that the VC infrastructure is not in place yet...or it's in a testing phase of some sorts.
But I should at least be getting > 1mbps.
Could it be the areas where I'm connecting from?
What HSDPA download speeds are you guys and gals getting in the Cape Town area?
I've never been able to crack 1 Mbps on http://speed.vodacom.co.za/speedtest/
Max was about 950kbps... but that's not consistent. I would say my average HSDPA speed is around 700kbps...
I'm using Samsung U700 via USB - and speed tests done in Parow East as well as Brackenfell (Vredekloof) ....
Just interested to see what the other Cape Townians' speeds are.
I think its a con.
Thanx for the feedback Vodacom3G.I've seen as low as 300Kb/s and as high as 1700Kb/s, but would peg an 'average' as about 1.1 to 1.2Mb/s. 5 seconds ago got 940kb/s. This is in Plattekloof.
It's very much a factor of your area, the number of people sharing your tower and the quality of the signal you get. Obviously the back-haul capacity to JHB where the test server sits, is also a factor.
A good test would be to go outside and see what difference it makes. If it does, you might be limited by signal quality.
You can also try in different locations, if you're mobile enough.
My gut feel is your phone is OK. See if you can improve the chance of getting a better signal, though.
I honestly don't know how many times this has to be explained:
So yes its NOT a speed test its a connection test. Its a con !!!
Easy fix, create a thread explaining what speed tests to do and what the different outcomes mean (or just use v3g's post you linked to) and....STICKY it.Stickied threads get a crap load more views than unstickied ones and this thread is VERY long to search each post for info.
But it only tests the connection between you and the tower you're connecting to, not anything else.If the bottleneck doesn't occur on that leg then obviously it's gonna report a fast speed.

I'd have to agree with v3g
On why i'm saying its accurate, is becoz i do the test during the day(while at work), and i get +-1600 to 1900kbps(HSDPA speeds) and when i try and download something it downloads it at HSDPA speeds.
vodacom speed test:
Download Speed: 1748 kbps (218.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 349 kbps (43.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
speedtest.net to vancouver 107kbps down 60kbps up
Yeah I got to agree with Garronm. While I kind of understand and appreciate v3g's explanation and it is the correct and valid explanation, it's no conciliation when basic browsing becomes a tedious, frustrating and time consuming process... If it weren't for the 2 year contract I'm tied down to I would seriously consider other options but for now the best I and many others can do is hope the service is improved and in all lightly hood it will be...
The Vodacom Speed test on http://speed.vodacom.co.za is in no way an indication of any national or international browsing or other data experience you might have.
It is intended to be used a a measurement tool to gauge the performance of the Vodacom controlled portion of the network and should be used as such.
