Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

This new star rating system is getting worse and worse!

In the last 10 day rolling window I only did 38gig on my 4Mb/s connection. As a result I have been "awarded" 3 out of 5 stars. What this means is that during office/on-peak time I only get a 1Mb/s connection for both streaming videos and FTP.

I feel this is TOTALLY unreasonable...even as I write this I'm getting a 2-3Mb/s connection all because I used a measly 38 gig over 10 days!

It seems that to be in the green(5 stars) with Webafrica I would have to use in the MB instead of GB per day.

U N H A P P Y
120gb a month doesn't sound that bad. Surprised you went down to 3 stars. I did 280gb last month on a 2mbit account, the lowest at one point I went was 3 stars, but even then, everything was still full speed even during the day I got full speed on nntp.

I found its easy fix the stars. Like Plugg, if you just move your downloads to midnight-6am slow, you even go up on stars and get more, if that is what you need. Maybe thats how I could easily do 280gb on a 2mbit account.

ps. I still download the odd thing during peak, but most downloads are midnight-6am, lucky for me that is when Sickbeard stars them anyways.

Personally I would have no problem concentrating my bandwidth usage between 12pm and 7am, however I have never seen it said that peak traffic is weighted more heavily than off peak on the new star system. Maybe WebAfrica could provide clarity on that.

As far as I know that was the old system and the new system works purely on total traffic?

We have always advised our customers to use the Download plus feature (12-6am) more to download than during peak/office times. This because all usage between 12-6am will not affect your star rating which is why we push our customers to use most of their downloads between that time. On a 4mbs uncapped account running at full speed of around 400kbs you can download approximately between 150-200gb during download plus a month. Like i said this will not affect your star rating so you can run at full speed during the day without hassles.

Now we are not saying only use your account during download plus but more so use the account intelligently by making use of the facility to your advantage.

Thanks for the info, I was misinformed about the new star system. Now that I know hopefully I can avoid the worst of the shaping .

@WAJustinW: Do downloads outside the 'Download Plus' period - but on Saturday & Sunday - affect one's star rating ?

Yes, usage outside 12-6am on weekends will account to your normal usage.

Hi guys,

If anybody else is being effected by the WebAfrica outage...you can workaround the problem by using IS's own DNS servers. Change them on your router to be:
  • 168.210.2.2
  • 196.14.239.2
You can do this on your router or PC (assuming you are using your router for DHCP this would then allow all your devices to connect to the web).

Hi All,

We are having issues with our DNS servers and our engineers are working feverishly to get things resolved.

I will post further updates as soon as I get more information. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Morning All,

Our engineers have confirmed last night's datacentre outage has been fully resolved and power has been restored.

Again, we would like to apologise to all our affected customers' and we appreciate your patience with us during the outage.

Hi.

My 4meg uncapped has been complete rubbish lately. Youtube doesn't buffer on 360p, I'm getting high latency in game, direct file downloads download at 5 kbs and to top it all off I have to constantly reset my connection because every 2 hours(or whenever my internet decides its time to be mean) my internet becomes unusable (1000 ping in games, webpages don't load at all).

I second this. This is going to be my last month with web africa. Can't even stream youtube clips at the lowest quality. I use less than a gig a day. It is not my line or my router, I get proper speeds with FNB connect which I use as a backup, and rarely had issues with mweb.

Just a quick question... You have said that traffic generated in the "download plus" period is not added to the amount used to calculate the star system. However can you confirm whether off peak traffic is still reflected on my usage history page (on the graph at the bottom) ?? In the old system off peak traffic did not reflect there..... Thanks

Off peak downloads are included in the usage history graph. They are not, however, included in the 'stars calculation'.

Or so it is for me :)

Have you spoken to our ADSL team around this to see if they can pinpoint the problem? If not can you PM me your customer code and I will get them to investigate.

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can provide some info:

I'm considering a Webafrica home uncapped 4Mb account.. I currently have the "Redafrica" 30GB account.
I play quite a bit of World of Warcraft and I'm fairly happy with the latency I get on this account (average 200ms). How would the uncapped account compare? Would it be worse due to shaping etc?
I absolutely cannot accept massive lag when gaming so this is pretty important to me..

Thanks.

I cant speak for WebAfrica but I have tested Telkom, Mweb, OpenWeb and Afrihost uncapped shaped accounts in terms of WOW latency. Openweb and Mweb both gave me best pings in the region of 185ms in the day from Cape Town. Maybe someone else can give some indication of Web Africas performance?
