Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

@Lycanthrope
Same with the ISP's Webafrica's basically my last hope it's why I get so frustrated, I like everything outside of the d+ hours, its just games at this stage of testing.

Report for todays D+ current experiance...
Logging in to SWTOR Times Out at varying points, same with second life.
Video streaming (vimeo and youtube) 100%
Audio Streaming (shoutcast) took a little to get going but otherwise no interruptions.
Web Browsing a little sluggish but not so much to complain (microsoft.com, reddit.com, engadget.com, arstechnica.com)
International News - 400KB/s steady

Ok so I'm happy with everything except the gaming, at least everything else is working properly !

Hey guys,

Changes were made last night which should have resolved the latency and slow browsing issues after midnight. Has anyone noticed a difference?

I've used pretty much every uncapped product in ZA ranging from MWEB to OpenWeb Gold (Vodacom Business, Altech, Internet Solutions, etc) and some dodgier ones including Afrihost when it first launched (what an insult to uncapped internet that is from an otherwise great company).

WebAfrica is by far the best. They have their hiccups, but their uncapped service is also only a month and a half old. Steam downloads are perfect, streaming is great (not perfect, but I'll settle for great) and their international latency is by far the best I've come across. Most of all, outside of DL+ hours, it's reliable.

Their support and user control panel is also world-class, professional and most of all, works.

I'm certainly frustrated by the hiccups, but I've been on every single backbone in the country, they ALL have hiccups. WA's are considerably fewer and far more tolerable.

The only other one that compared (to me, at least) was IS on OpenWeb Gold which ran at half-speed during the day and at night was full-speed. The half-speed thing pissed me off and the latency was ****.

The fact is that with Telkom's pitiful infrastructure, there's unlikely to be a "perfect" uncapped solution any time soon. Full LLU is necessary, stuff like this is just a stark reminder of how far we are from ever getting close to what the rest of the world takes for granted.

I remain envious of my SO's 10Mb uncapped access in Denmark :(

The fault isn't WA's though. I get the feeling that they genuinely are interested in helping and maintaining a high standard of internet access. Which is a helluva lot more that I can say about many other companies.

Just give it time. If the account was falling apart at the seams I'd be more upset, but then I also would've just switched back to OpenWeb (many customers of whom are using resold WA accounts via "DSL Haven" or whatever it was called, from what I've heard).

I only wish I had more transparency from them and knew exactly what they were investigating, what their suspicions are, etc
.
Do you think they launched before they were fully ready? That's what it sounds like. The service is having hiccups but customers money is flowing in, that's the difference.

Prophet, not providing enough bandwidth is benefitting only one party and i hope you see that.

I have to agree with the transparency bit. He's not telling us anything.

Im not a subscriber of this product (yet), but I have read every single page from this thread since the start (ie following it since then), because Im interested in the product. I have said a few times here that international pings is important to me, and most have determined that pings are better than most ISPs (except unshaped capped accounts maybe). Then comes D+ hours and everything gets shaped to death. Is this problem linked to the fact that everyone tries to download 30Gbs in this period, and the network is congested? After the upgrades done in December, it was sort of stated that they will have enough bandwidth for potential January clients.

I really wonder if this is the case?? I am here, frustrated the same as you the users of this products that plays your international gaming; on launch I really really hoped that this product will be the solution I hoped for. As said, Im not willing to jump from crap to crap, at the moment here is nothing that sells this to me. Yes nice low ping sometimes, but then broken 100x. Downloads seems ok, video streaming is ok, but still : this I already get with my current account.

Again, Im not throwing negativity about this product, if I wanted to do that it would have been in different discussions, at the moment Im just telling everyone that I know asking about the WA account to not jump over yet.

One solution instead of 3 different seperated solutions is what I want... :(

WAJeff I couldnt login to Star Wars the Old Republic Online and tested with Second Life too, couldnt login. Browsing was fast enough to be perfectly usable however not as fast as pre-midnight.

I will check again tonight though.

Otherwise... MUCH BETTER !

Interesting. Is it only SW:TOR or other games as well? Does this happen to local and international games or only international games?

Well I've never experienced that problem with SW:TOR before and the second life no login was what I experienced when the webafrica network had problems before the 21st december.

I dont have a huge array of online games to test and figured if two international ones werent working well it was late and I didnt feel like testing MW3, the point was kinda there.

It seems to be just a few programs that suffer. My WoW latency is consistent ~200 doesn't matter what the time of day is.

I have been throttled because of a setting or two I did wrong on Sickbeard so I am sitting on 188Gb for January (ps. use sickbeard on only one machine and be careful with what you select as wanted) but my latency stays the same in WoW and my browsing doesn't seem to suffer too much.

Hey guys,

Changes were made last night which should have resolved the latency and slow browsing issues after midnight. Has anyone noticed a difference?

Didn't play past midnight last night. Will have a look this evening and let you know although I get the feeling that if KinsZA still had difficulties then I won't be an exception :(

Will hold thumbs, thanks WAJeff.

Do you think they launched before they were fully ready? That's what it sounds like. The service is having hiccups but customers money is flowing in, that's the difference.

I don't think it's possible to ever be 100% "ready" when releasing an already temperamental product by any ISP's standards in ZA to a very large and sporadically-placed market.

WA's teething problems are nowhere near as bad as what other companies experienced. The thing is, the problems only occur when most users would be sleeping anyway. It's reliable: you know exactly when it's going to happen so it's not like you're minding your business and WHAM, everything goes to hell.

It really could be far worse than what it is. The service is by no means useless.

I mentioned this problem on I think the 3'rd or 6th of december and it was talked about in these forums so why it wasnt addressed who knows.

I remember making a prediction that the next bandwidth hit would come on 1st of Jan (All the people who had to give their months notice with mweb or openweb). I hope it is not so and Webafrica is trying to urgently get bandwidth, but who knows because we dont get told a thing.

@Jase This is only a 00:00-06:00 problem, any other hour its perfect. Try watching again in say 3 hours time.

Downloads are a bad indicator unless its just a simple save from a website. A news server you use multiple connections likewise with torrent or even normal http with a download manager, if one of them fluctuates for a second or so chances are it will pick back up before the program even notices. If the news server is webafrica, then its local traffic so I wouldnt be surprised at getting full speed on few connections.

If you want to do a true after hours test set your news (if international) to use 1 connection and test before midnight then test again after.

If you want to test video, youtube will probably be the streamer that gives you the least problems as I've noticed that it's always the least affected during bandwidth problems (willing to bet there's some measures to improve speeds and lessen international load), so test using vimeo or something live streaming. Speedtest.net is the huge villain for me when it comes to "my internets fine" take a look at that graph running in the background, if it looks very jagged then your connections not of a good quality at all even if end result is full speed.

So all in all, after midnight only and avoid the services that would be given priority to keep the peace so to speak.

This is a breakdown of what happened last night from midnight to 06:00 (torrent):

Hour Bytes Used Usage
00:00 - 01:00 30 479 951 bytes 29.07 MB
01:00 - 02:00 739 583 299 bytes 705.32 MB
02:00 - 03:00 835 202 294 bytes 796.51 MB
04:00 - 05:00 2 122 104 512 bytes 1.98 GB
05:00 - 06:00 2 627 821 576 bytes 2.45 GB

I didn't try streaming anything as I was too tired and went to bed but I will try stay up tonight and see what it's like.

It looks like the 00:00 - 01:00 slot is definitely a problem.

Or he started downloading late :)

But thats the window I tested in so I cant confirm any changes past 1am on my side.

Let's run some tests tonight again guys, but the feedback that I've sifted through between online and our tickets is looking much better!

What the hell happened to Skype?

See bottom left for download and upload speeds. Download is supposed to be around 125-150kB/s. The 23.0 is my noise margin (read: perfect/ideal/fine).

Who broke Skype?

Also, not throttled.

*nerdrage*

Anyone else finding things terribly slow for everything? Had to move over to my backup mweb account..

That pictures the stuff of nightmares.. what the hell are you talking to?!

Anyone else having issues streaming? even youtube is constantly buffering but then if I try to download I get full speed.
