Cloudflare free tier uses DUR datacentre and traffic goes via the standard transit. Pro and Business tier use JNB datacentre and use the premium transit. Compare http://mybroadband.co.za/cdn-cgi/trace to https://platinumwealth.co.za/cdn-cgi/trace

This also applies to Australia and some other fringe regions, due to costs.
 
dumbest thing is, even when using Argo (which is pay-per-use by the GB) you're still routed via DUR
 
worst rn is probably Cape Town, they route to North Africa and back because Durban would go via Joburg which defeats the point idk what the **** cloudflare does anymore

Yes I saw that they like DUR a lot. So being on Openserve I can switch ISPs but does not matter always routed to DUR or to CPT on occasion. I almost never get served by JHB.

Their dns is served from JHB for me.

It's ver interesting because a lot of traffic is moving around the country when it really doesn't need too.

Are they not an HE customer possibly?
 
@cavedog their own services (Warp, DNS, etc) run through premium regions. It wont matter what ISP you use, they route based on what tier the website you're accessing is on.
 
MyBroadband, for example, runs through the premium region because they're on Business tier. Same with Afrihost.com - but most others are on free tier and will get served from the less used regions.

Well HE peers locally and their peering policy is a bit skewed which we see providers follow blindly which can then prefer the HE paths.

Well with Supersonic I also get served DUR cloudflare like @waylander explained not all cloudflare goes to DUR though.

I know Supersonic does not use HE at all as far as I know.

Might be true but isn't the reason Cloudflare uses DUR for the free users. Easy to see when you compare path taken by a paid user to a free user as mentioned.
 
im pissed that paying $0.1/GB won't let me use JHB. utter nonsense on Cloudflare's part

Correct but they peer with them locally, and if they followed the peering document as HE provides and CloudFlare is an HE customer it will prefer the HE peer.

Ahh makes sense. Cloudflare is sending traffic all over South Africa. Durban gets routed to JHB and back to DUR. JHB gets routed to DUR mostly but sometimes CPT too. I basically NEVER see JHB on cloudflare except for their DNS like @waylander said.

Example. badboxx.ml is my domain on Cloudflare dns free. I'm in Centurion. Cybersmart is the only ISP that say screw this we send the traffic to EU. All the others go to DUR.

They banned me because 1 debit failed after I was unable to update my details due to an old cellphone number linked to my account so could not verify the OTP. So they want colour photo of me hold my ID. Bank statements with all the amounts visible and other debits. Scanned copies of my bank cards.

I refused so they blocked my ID number so can't signup again with them :laugh:
 
Wait, wait, wait...

Let's go off topic here for a second - why are are you guys on the free tier served out of Durban, yet my all my domains on Cloudflare go to London? (also on the free tier)
