If you take out a 24 month contract you will get the free 1 GB for the full duration of the 24 month contract.

So now it costs more for 2 GB on ADSL as it costs on MTN -
2 GB ADSL 384 kbps:
R245 "connectivity rental" +
R100 analog line rental +
R140 ISP (Webafrica prepaid 2 GB ADSL)
Total = R485 (or R385 if you always use an analog line anyway)

So for the same price (R400 on MTN) you can be mobile and get higher speed using HSDPA.
Just shows again how Telkom is ripping us off. Fixed line is supposed to be way cheaper. :(

[Of course, if you need 3 GB per month, ADSL is cheaper]

The 500 MB and 350 MB extended data plans on this page
http://www.mtn.co.za/default.aspx?pid=284128
Can someone tell me if they include or exclude a modem/data card.

I have been looking on the MTNSP website http://www.mtnsp.co.za/?pid=2 which only gives 1 Gig option with or without card.

I would need a modem/data card for net access on a laptop for low usage <500MB and am looking for the best option.

Also which is better for laptop - USB modem or data card, I know Vodacom have promo touting usb modem not sure which would be better for just laptop.

The PCM data card types does not have as good reception as the USB and they do seem more vulnerable sticking out of the laptop like that. Maybe go for USB.

Unless you are looking at getting a new laptop. Dell and Fujitsu Siemens now have built in data cards and the antennas are imbedded in the screen. The reception is quite good. I have a Sierra Wireless built in. Very convenient. Just pop in a sim card and forget about the card.

Prepaid peeps can makes their RANDS work more for them by buying 7 X R60 prepaid airtime vouchers at PICKnPAY or Checkers, worth R420, for R385. This in essence can be converted into 1034MB of data. This equates to 37c/MB. Now wouldn't it have been SUPERCALLAFRAGILISTICEXPIALOURDOCIOUS if prepaid okes could also get the free extra 1GB as well. That would be a whopping 19c/MB, beating the contract okes by R15 :D If MTN did their homework, they already know this, if not, they will be burning the midnight candles now and prepayers won't see the extra 1GB.  Come on PnP, Checkers, lets see your prepaid vouchers come down even more now. :)

What happens to existing contract subscribers, will we automatically get the price reduction and the additional 1GB of Data or do we need to take out another contract?

I want to know this too.

What happens with existing contract subscribers?

Currently I am using Virgin's 50c per MB, but will move if I can use my current mycall 100 contract.

AFAIK.

The pricing is strucktured into the billing system. So yes it should be across the board. No need to reload the bundle. You might just want to keep an eye on your bill for the next two months. With a mass system change like this there is usually some hick-ups

Well done MTN.

I will however not tie myself down to a 24 month contract just yet. Neotel will be launching their broadband offerings soon. Very curios as to what they will be offering.

True in a way, but you'd be surprised how quickly 2 years go by in South Africa without anything happening....I felt the same when i signed my 3G Vodacom 2 year contract in 2005...contract is done now and what "really" changed? Data rates did not change significantly [since 2005] and truly new "offers" did not arrive at all . Vodacom still got the exact same options as 2 years ago [with a faster speed].

Okay, this is a good offer but lie predicted, nothing really in it for low usage subscribers, but hell. 19c/MB is rocking cool... BUT i think ill pass for now.

I notice the E620 card now includes the external antenna and the earpiece, is this new to the special offer? I recall it was a nightmare to get hold of an antenna in June 2006.

confusing promotional linguistics

I see on MTN's site the following:"If you subscribe to the 1GB Data Bundle during this period, you will receive an additional 1 GB of data Free for three consecutive months after date of activation."

So if I understand this correctly, if I use prepaid simcard 1 today and load a 1 GB bundle today 19 Feb, and on 19 March and on 19 April, I will pay for 3 GB and get 3 GB free.

Then if I take simcard 2 and load a 1 GB bundle on 18 May, 18 June and 18 July, I will again pay for 3 GB and get 3 GB free?
So I can potentially get 6 GB free (spread over 6 months) using 2 different simcards?

The above statement could be misinterpreted as saying if I only buy 1 GB in month 1 and not in month 2 or month 3, then I will get 3 GB free over the next 90 days. Shouldn't the statement specifically say the free 3 GB is subject to buying 1 GB for 3 months in a row?

Was wondering about that myself. Not really clear in the way that its stated is it?

You'll automatically get the reduction from the next bill run
