Congratulations to MTN for shaking up the mobile data space with their new offerings.

In case you have not seen it yet:

2 GB + Modem: R 479-00 pm

2 GB (Data Only): R 399-00

Great to see that MTN made a move in the pricing space…it was becoming a bit stale :D

Nice, very impressive! Is this the announcement that was due for tomorrow or not? I presume they still only last a month? Do you have a link to a press release or something RPM?

Hi Syndyre

I just saw the ad in the Sunday Times :) Article to follow...

Reading the Sunday Times on a Saturday evening is a sign that you need a life or a vacation. I trust it is the latter ..........

That is good news indeed for all MTN users, gonna blow the dust off that MTN sim and see what it is made off.

Cool, thanks. Do you know how much the other bundles are going for now? 1GB should obviously be a lot less. I'll have to go get a Sunday Times tomorrow. ;) Doubt I'll be able to find one here tonight.

There's a lot of talk about shaping/differential charging on this thread:

Hope this package doesn't have all those restrictions. Now I'm just waiting for Vodacom's response!

I don't know if I'd use 2GB a month when I do most of my downloading on ADSL but 1GB at half that price or a bit more would be great, especially considering I paid R220 for 350MB a few days ago!

Great offer, our mobile rates aren't bad at all compared to overseas.

However I'd also like to see a reduction in out of bundle rates?

yup, i'm also loohing for something more in the 500MB range, They're HSDPA coverage is not quite good enough yet for me to consider them as an serious ISP candidate.

They'll obviously have to drop all the other prices too, I mean IIRC their charge for 1GB before was R499, that's probably going to have to at least halve to R250 if 2GB is now R399, which means the 350MB for R220 will probably be a max of R150, pretty good, less than 50c/MB. I'm just wondering what Vodacom's response will be, they could easily ignore Virgin as a bit of a joke, MTN's another story, especially when they're offering 2GB at less than Vodacom's 1GB!

Vodacoms response will be 2GB for............................................................................................R399. Surprised? ;)

Is this a bundle or a contract offering? It would make sense to have a 2 year contract with those tariffs . Although alot less sense to have it as a bundle which i can just load on prepaid [primarily because it messes up all the other bundles].

I can only conclude it has to be contract options, otherwise why announce a 2GB at all, and not just say "all tariffs lowered by x% ".

We had the same question when MTN launched prepaid bundles...initial thought was Vodacom would simply "match" it [thus not actually competing] . TWO years later , nothing.

What about iBurst charging R469 for 1GB?

Looks like I will be leaving iBurst in the near future. ...

Seems like its just a bundle, but you can get a contract with a modem for R479/month.

It's all in the details...

Hi MTNDD

Referring to my post in the other thread regarding this (exciting) topic:

Can you please break it down for us, the pros and cons, how it effects the existing data bundles, contracts, the SMALL PRINT...

It will prevent a lot of obvious questions to come.

Thanks
Gecko

This price cut looks good.
Now the only thing that remains before I go for this instead is to find out:
1) What is the cost for 500 MB package.
2) Why is 500 MB not advertised on the website.
3) Is there only 24 month contract still for data packages.

Thanks.

MTN doesn't currently have a 500MB package.

Well, they do now. Just checked their site and it now gives the following for bundle prices:
350 MB = R210
500 MB = R250
1 GB = R399

No mention of the extra GB, maybe that's only on a 24 month contract?

1 gig bundle was R499.00 is now R399.00- introduction of a 500mb bundle-350 mb bundle is now R210.00-100 mb is now R80- 10 mb bundle remains unchanged.

****Please note that if a customer subscribes to the 1GB Data Bundle between 18 Feb 2007 and 18 May 2007, he / she will receive an additional 1GB of data FREE for three consecutive months after date of activation. For the duration of the promotional period, the following details relating to these two contracts will be communicated****

what this would mean is that you would be charged in effect 20c per meg, wowsas!:D
