What is a tech purchase you quickly regretted?

I loved that DStv product. Back then I worked on remote sites, and I always carried it along when having to work through the nights to keep me occupied.

It was short lived.
 
Was being lazy and did not want to lay cable upstairs to extend wifi range so I got one of those extenders that uses the homes power lines for signal. Complete waste of money. Never worked. In the end I put up a cable to our upstairs and got a decent set of routers and have not looked back.
 
Not so much a tech purchase, but when I was in my early 20's (about 20 years ago), I wanted to get a DVD collection going, so I used to regularly buy them (either from Musica or Look & Listen, or from overseas if they weren't available). Looking at them now, while I don't out and out regret the decision, it was a total waste of money.
 
Back in around 2008 I bought this thing to wirelessly send signal from the decoder to another TV. As we were renting so didn't want to run cables. I mean it worked some times.

Not if you don't have any internet connectivity.
 
Garmin nüvi, used it maybe 5 times, then gps on phones improved and data costs where more reasonable

This just describes exactly why there's a saying, ""Different strokes for different folks." My brother-in-law just recently, as in Sept-Oct last year replaced his aging Garmin nüvi with one of the latest Garmin Drive models. That's despite me proving to him that Google Maps and Waze are far superior, especially with updated maps. He recently had to go for a conference somewhere in Pretoria, and that entire area was not available on his latest available Garmin maps. I showed him on Google Maps that area was charted there in full detail. Despite that, he still clings onto his Garmin.

One of his counter arguments was that he would not be able to navigate with Android Auto if his data runs out, or if he is in an area without any cellular coverage, but his Garmin would work. I then showed him that you can download offline maps onto the phone to be used in such an eventuality.
 
Can’t really think of anything.

Before I spend decent money I research it to death so it doesn’t happen.

Bit of a stretch I would say my only “fail” was opting for a smaller Apple Watch when I first got one but it was hardly a deal breaker and just altered my decision to go bigger when upgrading.
