It is sometimes obvious to me why Malema gets the support he does! Fsk if I was living in a shack, I'd take any one of your terrible ways of life any day of the week!

there are number of white people who get over their poverty and have similar cases, many kids walk home a few km's to school with hardly anything to eat, come home to domestic violence with no food in the fridge, mother is drunk, dad is in jail and the social worker refuses to help because they get beat up every time to try to help. And for some reason they find a way to get through their poverty, if there is a will there is a way..

I never said rural areas. You are welcome to swap your life, or even the hard life you had previously, with the current life of someone living in a squatter camp and then report back on the relative difficulties of both.

If I did, I'd work my way out of there in a couple of months... there are some parking attendants who made more than me when I started out.

I'm not saying they have a great life, and should be grateful - I'm saying with hard work you can get out of there - many have.

EDIT: btw - I'm not saying my life growing up was hard - I'm saying I wasn't handed everything on a platter, not getting matric was also my own doing (sort-of, thanks to a fanatically religious school). My life was only hard when I moved to Cape Town with nothing, no education, no money, nothing... it lasted a few years... and I'm through it, hopefully for good.

Feel free to provide your own opinion.

I think getting home from school and not having to go and fetch a bucket of water from a tap a few kms away and prepare dinner for my brothers and sisters because my mom was working and only gets home after 7 because she needs to wait for taxis etc gave me a "slight" advantage. Also being able to get home and open the fridge to grab a snack before doing my homework probably also made doing it easier than having to try and work with a grumbling stomach. When mom eventually gets home the child in the shack then has to study by candle light.

There are of course differing degrees of a difficult upbringing but I seriously do not think there is one white person on here who can even dare compare the way they lived to the way a lot of others do in this country!

Uhm what you state here is exactly the way I grew up - with the exception of running water. We did have that but only because my dad managed to organise a water tank that he placed on a stand outside the house. The point is if you want to get somewhere you make a plan.

1. only those using it as an excuse, find a way and get out of that 'life owes me everything mindset'
2. Can't argue there, they only succeeded in pulling them deeper into poverty (and managed to allow them to multiply)

Thats where this forum goes all wrong, its not OK for us to generalize about the very people who have been generalizing in an article posted - even though you'd think its quite obvious were not referring to ALL people in a specific group - unfortunately, it is VERY difficult for me to get the names and addresses of all the people I am referring to when I generalize, making it easier for the forum readers to understand exactly who I'm referring too. (I also don't think the MyBB database could handle the amount of data)

Odd I have a white friend who grew up with 2 death parents, they used to do odd jobs as gardeners and cleaners to get him to varsity, his currently a doctor... (but I guess the white skin helps!),

And I'm sure we can find more than a few black people who have made a success of their lives. It is not just about your actual living circumstances but the education of your parents and the support they are able to give you.
