The fact that it still needs to be connected to your phone is laughable.
If they made a desktop application it could keep its own contact list. I think the real reason it needs to be connected to your phone is because of the poor security.No, it's expected. WhatsApp does not sync your activity to a cloud, and therefore cannot possibly provide a web service without being connected to your phone. Your contact list and chats don't exist anywhere but on your phone.

WhatsApp uses a modified version of XMPP. It definitely does have a username (your phone number) and a password (in various versions based on your IMEI or your WLAN MAC).WhatsApp has no password. It relies on the fact that you're using the number of the account to authenticate you.
WhatsApp syncs your all contacts (including those not on WhatsApp) every hour. For 100 contacts this will be about 6MB a month. I don't know if this overhead is included in WhatsApp's usage report.

What is the difference between this and using an emulator? Havn't tried it but i assume it would be possible (Using bluestacks)
