WhatsApp vs Telegram - Features and security

:wtf: So they say it doesn't access your phonebook - or does it :wtf:
Optional in Telegram, it can use its own. Whatssapp will refuse to work without having access to your phonebook.

And as Ockie already pointed out, you can use a nickname and put in your MyBB signature, by example. People can contact you on Telegram without knowing your phone number,

What's the issue with WhatsApp being able to access your contacts?

Agreed. The problem is not that they can access it, but rather how they use it, i.e. if your FB account is also registered on the phone, it apparently uses your Whatsapp contacts to suggest FB friends, and other stuff I can't pretend to have any expertise around.

Yep, I've noticed, so where's the great horror in that?

Wrong answer. You know a full communication protocol. From this protocol it is very clear that server only works as a conveyor in the key exchange process. Once a key exchange is completed, and user messages start flowing, server is not in able to descramble it, as only two devices in the Universe have neccessary keys to do so. If someone on the server would like to interfere in the key exchange process, it would have to act using generic MITM techniques, meaning using tremendous processing power to crack the code in the short time.

In other words knowing server source code is not required for assessing security of the communication. Even you had server source code available, you don't have access to their server to verify whether it is really running this specific code. вы понимаете?

However knowing client code is neccessary to verify that this algorithm is really used and have no bugs in implementation that would affect affecting security.

Still waiting for Jan for explanation for "pseudo-openness" of the Telegram, he went silent. As a News Editor he shouldn't be such a biased person.
Wrong answer - commign from the guy who has not validated one claim - thats fresh

Also not Biased - he just pointed out one or 2 things you got wrong.
Point being Telegram can aces the data sent to their servers (not secret chats) even though they insist they don't.
on the other hand plenty of proof whatsapp cant access the same anymore

It does as all of these apps do....but you have the option to create a username instead of giving someone your number which they can then use to message you on Telegram.

Umm see my point at the bottom Take the permission away it still works. and yes i've had to put the permission back for so many people because they took it away and then cant figure out why all their chats in whatsapp dont have names -
And as Ockie already pointed out, you can use a nickname and put in your MyBB signature, by example. People can contact you on Telegram without knowing your phone number,

Sorry i misunderstood this point - honest mistake - just dont get why its supposed to be a biggie if its still done by default?
The Telegram application also requires less device permissions than WhatsApp and users do not need to grant the application access to their Address Book to begin messaging.

I see no issue - it was meant to replace SMS - also if you take the permission away on android you just don't see your names next to the numbers - still works - of course cant start new chats

i have been using Telegram for The Last 2 Years i have NEVER Ever seen it go down.
Not over a billion people using so guess they can cater for the traffic - but Whatsapp knows they have over a billion so they should cater for traffic

And you use Telegram only. :p

If I had to choose only one, I'd use Telegram exclusively, obviously.

Same here. I have Whatsapp for the Die Hards but those are really minimal in my circle. Mostly clients. Though some of them have started switching to Telegram also (but not because of me, I merely got notified on my Telegram when they signed up)

I'd rather not have the suggestions on Facebook either. Unsure why you find this so difficult to live with, in the age of unending customisability to make life easier for the user.

I'm unsure why you find friend suggestions difficult to live with. Facebook is going to suggest friends whether from your contacts, or mutual friends, or wherever else from.

I only want it to suggest friends from current friends, nothing more, nothing less.

It's a simple concept. It's worked fine for me for years.

For me, nothing. That is how the app works and I dont have a issue with it. What is nice about Telegram though is the username option as a extra so you dont have to give out your number if you do not want to.

Yeah I find the username feature quite refreshing and can see a good few use cases for it.

So you only want to have friend suggestions of mutual friends? Yeah, I fully see the inconvenience that friend suggestions from your contacts may cause in your life. :erm: Anyway, uninstall WhatsApp, problem solved? Or no? Does FB not request access to your contacts?
