And that's the problem in our country. Nobody seems to know that to make fibre viable you have to drive the cost down to ~R300 and market it to as many clients as possible.

Just to explain what I meant a little better. Its not that the fibre already exists and guys not understanding viability. Its that, on their site they state under 'do I qualify' the requirement is within 25km of x, they then have a map of highlighted areas they cover. So, 'qualifying' and being in an area they advertise they service, one expects to get the product. Turns out they don't. But you don't know this until after you've signed up for their offers, and have given your personal info including bank details etc. No where under FTTH does is say anything about additional contracts needed or any T&C applied to the offers or anywhere else on the site. Even looking in-depth at the AUP and T&C on site I see nothing(unless they've updated over last couple of weeks). What it does say above offers is 'Lightspeed FTTH service is aimed at a household or small business of 5 people or less.' It doesn't say 10 or 20 houses, it says 'a household'. So, even if you are in their advertised area of service and have the fibre at your door step, you won't be able to get it until you've marketed THEIR product to your neighbours. So, 10Mbps uncapped fibre @R499 sounds too good to be true, and as everyones heard, if it sounds too good it normally is. You have to work your butt off to make them money and get them contracts in order to get your line installed.
What they should have under FTTH is a 'we offer fibre in these areas at these price but it requires min x houses or entire street/block whatever.' Or how about actually working for the money and sending a rep to the areas they 'claim' to service to let people know its available, or even just do a knock and drop in the areas they want to target, at those prices they'd have orders over night.

Here in SA you LET OTHER PEOPLE DO YOUR WORK FOR YOU, and you just pocket the money.
The majority of SA dont know about FTTH and the advantages that it could bring, since it is not advertised and/or explained to them.

People need to get together via homeowners associations and work towards the goal together. Bishops Court did it successfully, so did Parkhurst and several other communities in Joburg. Here in Constantia our project has just begun market research - in 4 days we have got 10% of households to register for interest.
It really isn't as hard as you may think. Just set up a website, talk with your community and get involved - any community can have it if the market is there.
Right now it's a case of either waiting for Telkom (which may be x years from now) or just getting it done yourself.

I made private enquiries to Vumatel last year, getting ahead of myself and committing my whole street. The response knocked me right back on my ass.
No hope for my street. I personally know the challenge of trying to get 20 houses to commit to CCTV...mission almost impossible. They want 300 houses...

Keep working at it - you have to hone your marketing skills! speak to associations to encourage their involvement.
We already have close to 500 signups in the past few days. I guess we can apply then..?
Only problem is our area of interest is larger than vumatel's map area.

Only thing is all of the successful examples given are in affluent areas. So what I said about it being the deciding criteria still holds. I am better of spending my time elsewhere where it would bear fruit than trying to get support in my suburb.
