AND if you look at the details you'll see those areas had a lot of interest because they are highly affluent. If you read correctly you'll also see it's Telkom and not the 2 areas in the whole country which managed to get the interest of a business.

Yup, that is why they get that.

Then you still get the lazy slobs who post here about how the area was picked because they are a rich area or some other excuse. This whole African entitlement that people have here is disgusting.

On the whole group interest thing. If you have an open access network installed in your area, Lightspeed.co.za - which is Cyber Smart - will install FTTH if you can get R10 000 in retail subscription value interested.

Thats subject to a 24month contract.

So basically if you can find 7 people in you vicinity willing to signup for 50Mbps, they'll install. Just check on their coverage map that you're covered.

I've gone over their website, where does it state you need 7 or more people before they will connect you?

As far as I can see, help me out, you pay R15k installation cost and then you can get 50Mbps fiber for R1500 a month?

I am pretty sure that is only if you live in an apartment complex.

I've had quite a bit of correspondence with them on the subject, they'll do streets etc to. As long as they can install a central distribution point close enough to all those that want.

Its not on the website, this is from communication with them.

Sorry, there is no installation cost with what I mentioned, that's covered by the lock-in on the 24 month contract.

Edit: I am actually busy at the moment trying to get enough people in my street interested to get it rolled out.
 
Just heard that my new place has gigabit fibre. :D

I did have to move halfway across the world to get it but still...

A bunch of Telkom contractors have just pitched up in my area (Faerie Glen, Pretoria East) and are busy installing what looks like last-mile FTTH infrastructure. A whole bunch of trenches have been dug along the residential pavements (yet again) for the characteristic green plastic fibre cable ducts, and fibre optic cable is being strung along the existing aerial distribution system that carries the normal voice/DSL copper wiring.

Here are some (crummy) photos :

Waiting to see if they're going to install any kind of terminal equipment on the old wooden poles.

Interestingly, Telkom's new FTTH coverage map shows both "FTTH available" and "FTTH planned" areas, but my area is miles away from any of them!

I've had Fibre cables outside my house for about 5 months now, still no fibre available in my area.

Their website says under Products: R499pm for 10Mbps (FTTH)
but under FAQ:
Can I get LIGHTSPEED on a shorter term?
Yes, LIGHTSPEED is available for:
1 year contract @ R13,999
2 years contract @ R11,999.

Those are business prices. They'll install that right away for you, without you getting group buy-in. Also contention ratio is lower on those.

You need to expand the FTTH section at the bottom of the page.

Don't be fooled by lightspeeds website pricing... its all dodgy advertising imo... if you want the 10mbps at R499 you need to have a minimum of R10k worth of clients for them monthly on your street/complex before they will do it, even though the fibre already exists there. Best is, ignore website and call them to get true pricing and requirements
