Which Fiber ISP?

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1
Swearing at them and behaving like a proper jackass worked. Im not proud of how I behaved though.... Sad that that is what got them to get their act together.

If Cybersmart Lightspeed on DFA (Dark Fiber Africa) is available then that hands down.

Can't vouch for anything else but I've had 0 downtime, static IP and it is good'ol 1000BASE-X straight into my apartment (meaning my connection to their data center is standard gigabit ethernet over fiber)

Only available on their fibre network. While impressive, it's limited to where the lucky few who can access it. You can get any ISP with business access to deliver 1 Gbps to your home on DFA, but you'll pay what business pay for that.

Hence I said "If" as if it is available then go for it

They throttle my connection to 400mbps at their data center but the backbone between me and them is Gigabit ethernet which has been excellent for my latency & reliability

I'm paying R600 p/m (early contract signature but costs R899 normally I believe).

Hmm, It's worth the wait to be honest. Remember they just won ISP of the year so they have probably had a massive surge in sign ups compared to normal so they are probably trying to scale their teams accordingly.. bit difficult to plan for something like that, talking from experience...

Do you have a Ticket ref that @PBCool can look into?

I am tired of waiting for decent internet.. I've had to move to get decent internet access and I am here to stay. Been waiting for 3 years to have fibre at home, hence my due dilligence to make sure I make the correct decision.

It's been 4 working days now, and other ISPs whom are also new and up and coming responded faster.

CISP's network will win over said new and up coming ISPs... Also when you have an issue with your last mile provider those new and up coming ISPs won't have enough clout to get anywhere compared to CISP :)

That's what worries me about others... and why I haven't signed up with them. But to make a decision I need the info from CISP I asked for.

With Cool Ideas, I have found best is to send a PM to @PBCool or phone Cool ideas Directly, if you want answers. I have been with them now for 3 years. Their support has been amazing. Have not had a need to complain about anything in the last year. So hard to say how support is, but last year still, it was excellent.

Thanks will do, I like direct anecdotal experiences like this.
@PBCool please hit me up with COOL-20181102-168044

Last I checked the forum's @ notifications weren't working.. is it fixed now?

All good.. I just wanted to alert you to the fact that PBCool might not get the alert so a manual PM might need to be made.
I did the PM route, I got an official response, rather a stock cut-and-paste one that doesn't answer my questions so I am going to pose the questions I had here rather seeing that many of you are very knowledgeable.

1. I need to know on their deals, if there is an installation cost (their website is cagey about this) as a piece of cable will need to be run from the box outside into the house.

2. Can I ask them to port-forward all TCP/UDP ports on their ONT to my Mikrotik Routerboard so that I can do my own router/firewall and not have to wait days for requests to do stuff like a port forward when I get a new <insert_name_of_gadget_here>

3. What is the FUP and how much on these "uncapped" packages do I need to download to get throttled. Also what is the shaping like (in other words do I need to keep my seedbox to sail on the high seas or not)

1. Who is the fibre provider in your area? If it is Vumatel, then you will have to pay them R1750 (or whatever the price is now) to install the line from the little box to your property. I am not sure about the charges from other fibre providers, but cool ideas does not cover the fibre install fees. They will however cover the activation fee on Vumatel, which is an additional R1k basically.

2. I am not technical enough here to really answer that question. I know that I have full control over my router, and all its settings.

3. From my experience, there is no FUP (having hit over 2tb a month, for 3 months in a row at one stage). There is also no shaping from my experience, and the only thing I have had a problem with is twitch streams. My routers firewall does not like twitch for some reason.

Just a quick thing, if the fibre provider is not openserve (who I believe is the only one that allows it) you can only ever have a single fibre ISP that you use.

1. The fibre provider is Octotel. Hence I am clueless about the install cost.
2. Most of these FISPs including Cool Ideas do not allow you to muck around with the router AFAIK
3. I only want a single ISP, but I wish to choose the right one.. don't want to pay school fees.

Thanks will check it out.
Thanks because all I got was a canned answer via e-mail, not what I was looking for.
After this morning's disastrous teleconference (Thanks again, Telkom), its becoming pressing to get the FTTH live here.
