Zest T1

Lol, happy... Yeah... :erm:

My assumption based on my own observations:
Both the Afrihost representatives as well as those from Zest have decided to completely ignore this thread, even though they have responded here in the past. On their Facebook page, Zest will remove any comment they deem 'not positive' even if said comment is a question.

I find this practice pathetic.

They are unwilling to answer our queries and hide behind their excuse of "we are a start-up company" as though that is supposed to mean something. They have a whiney CEO who instead of facing his challenges head on will rather rant about it, basically telling everyone to back off, or something- he wrote a letter somewhere about it- think it's still somewhere on their facebook wall if you want to read it.

Afrihost especially, have lost a lot of the good faith they had, just because they choose to keep silent, were in the past they were open and willing to help (this is my opinion- since they have stopped responding in this thread, I have lost a lot of the respect I once had and I have the feeling I am not alone in this). It might not be their hardware, but you know what they say: silence is an answer too.

Once they start giving me something to be positive about, I might just start being positive.

This is kind of a reply to the thread in general.

We haven't been monitoring this thread to be honest, we've been dealing with any queries that come through on our Official Mobile thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...obile-Feedback-Thread?p=13164100#post13164100

It would be generally better as otherwise it's hard for us to make sure that every query gets answered. At the time of launch there were about 3 (or more) Zest threads and it was difficult to provide assistance on all of them.

With regard to Zest's practices, I guess that's totally up to them, I can't say what is behind what they do or say. But I can imagine that as a young company, this is something they will learn to manage better and get better at working around negative sentiment and complaints. Take it from me - it ain't easy being cheesy.

Please post on our Mobile thread if you have queries, or PM and I promise you'll always get an answer form our side.

Hi guys and Afriman:
I ordered mine last night. order processed. waiting for delivery this week, I hope.
I have a few questions:
1. Does the MTN Afrihost data SIM come with the phone delivery or will it be in another dispatch?
2. Will this data SIM work on another device: like a 3G dongle? does it need a afrihost GUI to use the data SIM?
3. if I do not use the data SIM in the phone, can I replace that slot with my other SIM (vodacom on S1 and Vodacom on s2)?
4. Does the data 1GB on the SIM get carried forward to the next month is not used? or is the data 12GB available anytime in the that 1 year period?

Can't wait to start using the phone--the dual SIM was what sold me.

Thanks
SL

Hi there

1. You get the Data SIM with the phone, all ready to go.
2. Yes, you can use the SIM in any compatible device, you just need to add our APN.
3. Yes, you can use any data or voice SIMS in the device, but you'll have to set the data SIM if you have data on both.
4. We don't carry over unused data.

Hope that answers everything :)

I really did not expect that with the screen polarisation (45 deg type). Thanks for the enlightenment. (My primary device is the Amoled GS3, also an Amoled Nokia C7 before that, which is somewhat immune.)

View attachment 135728I know it hasn't been used but its still impressive. My S2 dies in a day, used or standby makes no difference

I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I believe the battery statistics being reported by the phone are completely inaccurate.
It could explain why it stays on 96% battery life for two days, not using it.. And then just crashes to near sudden death mode at some point.

Something like this:

1. Same delivery
2. Should work on another device, just use afrihost APN
3. You can put any sims in that you want (haven't tried 2 voice cards at the same time yet, you select what you want eg Messaging from a specific sim)
4. No roll over on data, 1 gig per month

thanks helps a lot.

Thanks Afriman!
Follow on--when can I expect delivery? will i get notified via email or SMS when shipping dispatched?

Having nowhere else to take out my frustration I'm throwing out here! The T1's screen accuracy is driving me insane! I've stopped replying to lengthy IM's as I always end up typing complete garbage due to the taps not responding properly!

Am I alone here?

Gosh I am at the point where I'm going to start using my wife's old iPhone!

Thanks for the link, Afriman. Though I think why we did not post there is because that thread is for Afrihost mobile, and not really aimed at this device. This is more a thread for zest than for Afrihost. So, I think most of us will still use this thread as it's device specific, and does not get lost in the noise of other queries. Please look through this thread for a bunch of things for both you and for zest. Rather than duplicate what we have already said, it would be easier to look at this thread.

We love Afrihost, and will support it. And yes, what zest does is up to them. But you were the one that brought us this product. We would like to hear from you too. They didn't do this on their own.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Now this guy is properly trained in PR! Well done Afriman

After the initial teething trouble and unhappiness - is everyone happy with the Zest T1?

It seems there is less comments on this thread and the FB page?

Considering I am upgrading from a Samsung Pocket, I am very happy with the performance difference... Although, my zest does occasionally lag when scrolling causing it to "hiccup" a bit. I think that's the protective screen maybe interfering with it.

What I am not happy with is the communication. I have two repairs needed on my phone - one is entirely my fault though, but the other is that my screen is not properly fixed into the case and is lifting a bit out the bezel on the one side. I contacted Zest Mobile last week, but haven't been given any direction as to sending the thing in for repairs. I poked them again yesterday, but nothing. Maybe it's better to phone them instead of emailing, but I find I have to email these things otherwise I forget the details discussed. >.<

After reading many posts in this thread I must say that Zest's customer "service" (sic) is worse than Telkom's.

@Afriman:
  1. The concept of a service provider having it's "own" phone is great - next time don't go with a start-up company!
  2. Use another courier company - CCD is the worst I have ever experienced!
  3. Thanks for the assistance with the sim card!

Battery meter issues

I am experiencing similar issues, particularly the battery dropping suddenly from about 50-60% to about 15-20%. A number of users were reporting similar issues earlier in this thread - have OTA updates fixed this for other people?

EDIT: My IMG tag doesn't seem to be working, but you can see my battery histogram here. The vertical cliff on the right is between switching my phone off and back on again.

The Zest is a great phone. I got one for the wife, she is totally over the moon with it. It's always difficult to weigh up going with a product that anyone can get anywhere, like on of the big mobile providers, or taking a chance on something new and innovative. I think the Zest turned out great and the sales so far show that it's a good value product. But now that we've in the mobile device space, we'll weigh up our options.

I must admit that while I understand there are complaints regarding CCD, we've generally found that the ratio is pretty low. By working with them we've increased our successful delivery ratio to well over 90% ( I don't have the exact figure). While I think we can always improve, this is definitely a step in the right direction. CCD are very meticulous in how they do things, but ultimately we believe this is towards a reliable and consistent service level to our clients.

Pleasure, glad we could sort your SIM issue out :)

Sorry, have to disagree here.

In my opinion, the Zest device is very low quality. The screen accuracy and garbage GPS made the device, for me, unusable. I didn't experience the battery issue, but, I'm accustomed to plugging my phone in wherever I go; work, car, home, etc.

Lets not forget the poor choice in memory partitioning, which would make the device fill up after its own update. If my understanding is correct, this was so that you could connect your phone to your PC! Really! Who does that anymore? Everything should now be cloud based, especially as you get free storage from google and cheap data from Afrihost. :-)

In my view, you'd be better off spending a little more and get yourself a Moto G.

As for the courier, meticulous, yes; but, extremely slow. I know its not all their fault, but, receiving the phone in July after placing the order on 18th June was too long; but they had it for over a week.

I've had the same experience as well. I wonder when Zest/Afrihost will acknowledge this as a known issue - and advise re timelines for resolution..
