'Zuma Will Be Next President'

I am gobsmacked! There are folk out there who are intelligent enough to type a posting who seem to believe that Zuma could actually govern this country. God help us!!!
Well at the moment, the smart money says that Zuma will govern the country. Like it or not. Whether he will govern the country well is up for discussion. But we have no hard evidence one way or the other. The proof as they say, is in the eating. So get your knife and fork ready .......

Sorry if this is asked before, but what would happen if Zuma is ANC president and is tried for corruption on the arms deal?
If Zuma becomes ANC president it's highly unlikely (and thats an understatement) that he will be charged with anything to do with the arms deal again. The only reason that he was charged previously was because he was a threat to MBeki. (Doesn't mean he's not guilty). This is all about internal ANC politics. If Zuma wins, there won't be a point anymore. The ANC is desperate to present a unified front. Charging it's own leader with fraud is not the way to do that.

He may get assassinated though. I sure as hell would make sure I'm standing at least 20ft away from him at all times.

What we must realize is the president is really a single spokesman representing the country and the experts within his cabinet are the individuals responsible for governing the country. What we should be considering is who will govern along side him.

As for JZ, considering his chequered past, it speaks volumes that he still enjoys huge support within the ANC. This is perhaps due to the lack of leaders within the party or perhaps it's indicative of Jacobs’s charismatic and infectious character.

Which ever way you want to look at it, the rest of the world might scoff at his appointment as state president (that's if he is elected) but honestly there is no such thing as a straight politician. The job by definition requires unscrupulous and dishonest individuals from Blair to Bush to Mbeki, they all guilty of unethical behaviour but it's part and parcel of being a leader

That will be interesting. Reminds me of this:

I have to disagree with you there, if, or rather, when Zuma gets elected as ANC president, I think he will be charged. That Acting Director of Prosecutions has proven with the Selebi issue that he answers to Mbeki. I think that is the "ace up the sleeve" for Mbeki.

And he will be tried, and judging by the fact that his corruptor has been found guilty, it is safe to assume he will get the same fate.

I read somewhere that should that happen, the ANC will have to call a "special" conference to elect a new leader.

Although Zuma is leading by points, one cannot rule out a TKO by Mbeki. He has all the powers and time to do so.

Would he stay in as ANC president even if that turns in SA president while trial is continuing? Would he remain in office until verdict, in which case could he give himself a pardon? I'm stretching it here, but time is not really on his side with the top position and the recent supreme court ruling about his corruption case.
As leader of the ANC, he would then have power and influence to change the decisions Mbeki made - i.e. to prosecute or not. Heck, he might even decide to prosecute Thabo for his dirty arms dealings!!

Seemed to me you thought he could but then perhaps I'm reading too much between the lines:rolleyes:
You mind reader YOU ....:p

So it might be a royal rumble at the union buildings for the next year while they sort out their own grievances with each other... Another year of nothing getting done. :(

As ANC President, Zuma will have power within the ANC. In fact, it already shows through his support.

But, as country President, Mbeki will still have power over country matters. I cannot see how would Zuma as ANC President dictate what NPA does while Mbeki is ruling the country.

True, only in Africa could an entity such as Zuma be put into a position to govern. The point though is, he, like his predecessor simply do not have the capacity to do so. The proof in this case is not so much in the eating as it is in the last 4000 years. So yes, if he is elected be sure to have your fork 'n knife ready.

I'm not exaggerating but many people are talking about emigrating if Zuma comes into power. Foreign investors have 3 major concerns: crime, zimbabwe and zuma.

Exactly! If you were a potential investor, would you invest in SA? (though I do think you underestimate the number of concerns, 40 million odd:sick: would be closer to the true figure, I would say)

Something called return-on-equity. Basically the returns on the money you put into a company.

Remember that investors (fund managers and traders) really invest in companies within countries and not the countries themselves.

And South African companies have been and will continue to coin it, and offering great returns to investors.

The only time there will be an exodus of foreign companies is if Zuma adopts a policy of nationalisation or tightens our labour policy (which makes labour more rigid).

However, remember that Zuma has been at pains to inform the general public that his economic policies would not differ from that of Mbeki (Remember his recent meeting with black business), that means a democratic and capitalistic state.

Furthermore, investors from the chinese front are already lining up to pour more cash in SA. Recall that the chinese have just poured billions in SBSA, they did not do that without consideration of long-term political developments!!!!!!!!!

The foreign investors will leave if Zuma becomes president story is a bogey, the truth is that foreign investors will leave if Zuma enacts legislation or policies that impinge on their ability to gain profit, and it does not seem to be the case.

Lastly, I am not a Zuma fan, just a realist.

Well, the South African financial sector, construction sector
