3G/HSPA/LTE Routers

I need a recommendation for (cheapest possible solution)
* USB LAN router (no wireless required)
* CellC 3G compatible dongle (is it best to get one from CellC?)
OR
* 3G Router with LAN where you can disable wireless.

Hi all,

Does any one know which 3G routers work well with the CellC ZTE MF668 USB dongle.

I found some threads and found that the tp-link unit works well but what is the model number of the unit and where can one purchase one from in the Johannesburg area?

Duxbury say that the MBRN 3000 unit is not compatibible.

Please advise.

Both the MR3420 & MR3220 should work. You can get them from Uniterm Direct. Remember to tell them you are a MBB member ;)

Both the MR3420 & MR3220 should work. You can get them from Uniterm Direct. Remember to tell them you are a MBB member ;)

From what I understand, one has to use the internet to manage data usage if putting stick in router or you will have to plug stick from router into PC to check data balance?

I've tried to get a login password sms'd to my stick, to no avail - do you think it's perhaps because I have no airtime, only the 5GB data?

No, I got a password instantly and my airtime balance on my 5GB sim is zero. Probably a temporary website/system error. To be safe, put the sim in your phone when requesting the password. Once you have the password, their website is quite fast and it's easy to get a remaining balance.

Are you guys talking about the mytools service, or something else?
 
For those of you who use the TP-link modem - what % do you get in "signal strength"? Trying to work out what classifies as a good or excellent signal in the router's % rating

I get about 40% - 50%. Short extension cable (10cm), my ZTE MF668 is next to a window.

40% is around -87 to -90 dBm
65% is around -70 dBm
 
I am surprised - I bought an 11dBi antenna, mounted it up really high, and am only getting 58%?

If it's a directional antenna you need to experiment with moving it around. You could be pointing in the opposite direction of the tower.
 
Will try that - it has a beam angle of 50deg, and you can never be more than 90 degrees out, so the max I could currently be out is 40deg, or not?
 
If you were pointed exactly perpendicular to tower (worst case you can have), and the antenna picks up a 50deg beam, you're 40deg out on aim?
