Is this with data, sync and 3G on?
3g on, wifi off, only my gmail and whatsapp has permanent sync on. But my phine was only waked twice by apps the whole night.

LPS, like KI4 is a modem that works very well in SA. I find HSDPA speeds better on LPS than KI4.
LPS is also obviously newer than KI4, but stick with whatever you find best for you.
Have you tried LPS?
Maybe try clearing the data and cache for the app? (Settings -> Apps -> Whatsapp)
Have not tried LPS. I changed from the stock modem because I was not getting signal at some places and this changed. KI4 improved battery life and signal for data that is at some of the places as well as wifi radius. I will try LPS now and give you an update.

You can also try BVLP7. I'm currently using it and seems pretty good. Also download GetRIL to match RIL and baseband. This just helps the two communicate as they should.
There is not really a "stock" modem - the modem shipped with previous versions for SA on GB was either KI4 or KL1 and for ICS it was LPS. These modems work well in other parts of the world, but seeing that it was chosen by our operators, I guess "stock" can be attributed to the SA firmware.
Just read up on GetRIL. Someone mentioned that there is a new thread on XDA about GetRIL that points out a couple of pitfalls. I have not read it at all. I tested GetRIL once and it told me that my my modem is not matched ... but all works extremely well. So I deleted GetRIL as I have no use for it. Perhaps you guys know something I don't on the subject so it might be worth while, but I will stick to my "unmatched" setup.
Everything will still work. But having the correct Radio Interface Layer and baseband just allows the two to communicate as they were designed to. One may experience better battery life or better connection speeds or more stable connections. Its up to you but I prefer that it matched.
Sorry I didn't wanna look through the whole thread just want to ask if I need to clear cache or dalvik or anything special when installing a modem zip file through cwm?
Guys, just to report. The IP5 still can't beat the gs2, never mind the S3.
Thanks. What firmware and modem do you currently have?
On what grounds? #JustCurious

Apple: 1.2ghz dual core, 4" screen, 1gig ram, now also with turn by turn navigation.
Android: What? But my s2 does that....
It does however have LTE, and bt 4.0
Not things that i miss on my gs2.
S2 also has bluetooth 4.0
