Is WhatsApp the SMS-killer?

Yeah. There are many apps out there that offer messaging for a fraction of the price of an sms. I just don't understand why sms's are still so expensive? It probably costs the Service Providers peanuts...
 
Whatsapp is a great cross platform app and has a large following.

Could it kill SMS - no i don't think so - you still need a smartphone to run it.
Also a lot of BBM users don't care to load on their phone as well................
 
I've found whatsapp pretty stable... works very well on edge 3g and even on gprs

Why is WhatsApp getting so much coverage? It's no different from any other IM app on your phone, including Mixit, Fring, Google Talk, etc. It's not new, what's the big deal? Or am I missing something?
 
The days of SMS are numbered. or at least the days of SMS costing as much as it currently does.

I've tried using some of the others and WhatsApp is by far the simplest to set up and use. No usernames, no password. It's just install and go and it's functionally very similar to SMS. I think because it's so simple, it's going to have greater uptake as well and more of the contacts on my contact list already have WhatsApp than any other IM app.

Works fine on my Moto Defy on EDGE. Only time I need 3G for WhatsApp is when i receive a large file on WhatsApp. If you on EDGE and receive or want to send a large file it tends to time out a lot.

I cant keep phone on 3G....drains my battery to quickly.
 
Is there any technical reason why WhatsApp is only available for smart phones ?

How about a J2ME version for Java-enabled lower-end phones?
 
Here is the difference: Cost me 0 cents to receive an SMS but Whatsapp & Co requires me to be connected and depending on your network, that cost could also increase be per session connection
 
To me, on my Motorola V360, this would be considered a mXit clone.

Being able to run only a single Java application at a time, and it taking 100% of the viewable screen, I am unable to do anything else whilst said app is open.

So yea - 100% useless to me (Unless it can still beep in suspend mode :p)

For the consumer yes, but not for the business market. I will gladly continue to pay 22c Ex-VAT to send SMS reminders to my wifes clients, but for personal use my wife is getting a BlackBerry and I most likely will also get one.

Well obviously they are so expensive because they are so popular! In a way it is customers, not operators that drive the high prices
