Today I got this strange phone call. The person said they where phoning on behalf of Microsoft. The person had an Indian accent. This person carried on to say that they have had an increase in complaints about Microsoft Windows 7( I thought this was BS from the get go). Then she said that this was just an information call to tell me what I must look out for. She said that "Electro magnetic junk files (no such Google Entry ) are invading computers in the Western Cape and that they cant be stopped by antivirus. I told her some junk and put the phone down. I wasn't sure if this has happened to other people, so I did a bit of the Google and found tons of entries. From what I have read, it is a telemarketing scam. So beware.

Sounds like the same type of scam calls reported here before.

Wow the strings of comments on other sites amazes me how far people are willing to go for scams etc

Family member just received a call from the above scammers. Very Indian accent, insisted they were calling from Randburg, JHB. ET, IT support.

When it was pointed out that family member was from Randburg and that the caller had a foreign accent, the reply was "no, all the people in Randburg talk like this". :) Even referred to Cape Town as a "place in the Cape Peninsula where our system indicates you are residing in a house there".

This person insisted that they had detected an unusually high "Microsoft anomaly" and wanted to speak to the "computer operator"... and they were official "Microsoft supporters". When challenged they referred to a "survey that Microsoft had conducted proving more than 54% of computer operators experienced problems with Microsoft". At this point the call was cut short... my sister in law hung-up the phone.

Damn... I REALLY want these people to phone me. I want to play. I could have sooooooo much fun with them. :D

I just got one. I just got one. Tralalalala..

"Good day sir, I am phoning from * garbled * security services, how are you."

Hi, I am fine thanks... what can i do for you ?

"Hello, I would like to speak to the physical owner of that computer which you are using."

I am the owner of this computer.

"Are you the physical owner of that computer there in front of you that your are seeing."

Yes I am... but it is just a screen in front of me, the computer I am owning is under the desk, I can't actually see it from where I am sitting...

"Okay then sir... I would like to then take this opportunity to alert you to the fact that there is an increase in computer corruption with software these days and that we have been alerted to an increasing number of corrupt emails being sent from your computer."

Oh dear, this sounds serious... which email address ?

"I am sorry sir... "

Which email address is sending out these corrupt emails ?

"It does not matter which one sir... we have been receiving a Microsoft notification about these emails..."

Microsoft ? Why would they be reading my emails and sending them to you... I don't understand...

"Sir, you are using your computer are you not.... and you are sending out emails yes"

Well, not now, because I am talking to you.

"Yes, this I know yes... but your computer has email software yes"

Yes it does...

"Well then sir... your emails have been getting from unknown people or persons software corruption that will need to be disabled..."

Wait, I am running anti-virus and I have had no warnings...

"Sir, there is a difference between virus and software corruption... the virus will destroy your hard drive, the software corruption will try to..."

Hold-on, my hard drive is in my computer... it is a physical thing... made out of metal... are you saying a virus will destroy my hard drive, like rust ?

"No sir, what I am saying is that your Microsoft software is corrupt and..."

How can my hard drive be rusting... it is only a year old...

"I am not saying that it is will be rusting with any virus sir.... your Microsoft..."

Wait, I am not using Microsoft... I use an Apple Mac... but please tell me how I will I be able to see rust on my hard drive that is physically in front of me and stop it from being destroyed... what must I look out for ?

"Pardon me Sir..."

Well, like I said... I am not using Microsoft... I would suggest you try and phone our government here in this country... they would definitely need to hear about this corruption you seem to be able to detect ... * click, she put the phone down on me *

:D

I am sure you could have done much better... but I was not prepared for it and had no time to rehearse !

P.s. it came from a 099 number... cannot remember.. . forgot to write it down.

I also received this phone call, I asked for their number so that I could call them back : 021 300 7901

I've had a few clients report this as well. Damn why don't they phone me. ?
Usually an Indian sounding person , male or female, from a company called "ET Protection". What they show you is your event viewer with a few errors to indicate your machine is at fault. Then try and sell you same "software" for so much $$$'s. You pay for it and then try the software and it does not work ... No way to get your money back.

Lovely.

Thanks for the warning :D

Wonder how many people have they snared so far? :D

Still more clients complaining about this issue ... One caller said he was from Cape Town , another sounded as if they were phoning via a VoIP line. Client said call was an international "sounding" call. They got very pissed off when the client demanded to know who, where and what they are.

What I don't frigging understand is that a good few ppl have written here at MyBB (1yesterday), bemoaning they got ripped off by these very same scammers - and yet this is old new news! Have read of this many time in the last couple months!

Lol! I just got that very same call. Asked and asked how he got my number, and he kept up with some bulls*** story of how they got it. So then he asked me if i had Windows 7 or Windows XP etc. I was like "if you can get my number somehow, then how can you possibly not know my OS?".
I was like "Thanks, but i know how computers works"

People think I'm stupid. :/
