Telkom ADSL speed upgrades going strong

Close to 200,000 isn't enough! I want my 10Mbps too! But well done Telkom for being semi competent.

and what about the congested exchanges being resolved?

Anyone can offer "faster" Internet speeds for the same price by simply increasing their contention ratio! IMO Telkom failed horribly with the speed upgrades!

What is the total number of ADSL lines ?

200 000 on 10mbps already strikes me as a bit inflated.

I would have to grudgingly agree though that besides the appalling state of their residential access infrastructure, other areas have improved like the call centres and installation time etc.

Moholi further highlighted that Telkom currently has close to 200,000 10Mbps ADSL services installed in the company’s ongoing 4Mbps DSL speed upgrades.

Sorry but I call BS.

200,000 UP TO 10Mbps ADSL services I'll believe with maybe 20% getting 10Mbps and the rest of us on 6 & 8Mbps. Maybe RPM can design a poll to analyse this.

I m going to hazard a guess that this means 10Mpbs ports available in the exchange, this does not translate in to users getting that speed as the copper local loop has to be factored in. Still, nice to see they are making some serious progress on the upgrades! 53 MSANs is pretty good going since that includes a fibre link to the MSAN and then all the civils type regulation and work to also be done.

PS do you think you can run your own fibre cable to the MSAN?

Great news, now that the upgrades are finished maybe someone at Telkom can come fix my line for me.

Getting < 2mbps since Feb and Telkom keeps on closing my calls without doing anything.

I know nothing about 10 mbps... at home I was bumped up to 6 and at the office was bumped up to 8.
Seems like a very haphazard and random upgrade.

+1

Thanks to these upgrades the exchange I'm connected to is congested. Telkom came yesterday to see if they can fix the problem i'm having. Apparently a wire was touching the metal plate and that would solve my problem. Still the same high ping.

Also stuck on 6mb, but one weekend (2 weeks ago) my speedtest.net results were 7.5 - 8.5mb. They normally sit at 3.5 - 5.8mb depending on the time of day.

Since the upgrade, I now get less that 1meg line. Early morning I might push close to 2 meg....

so ja, I am paying more to my ISP, but my speeds are worse than before the upgrade....

If line upgrades are just a software switch then it shouldn't be seen as such a great achievement as they make out it is.

I am a happy 10Mbps user, can't complain, also had it at the previous place I stayed, so I am not completely surprised at the 200 000 number they give here. For sure I understand there are many users who only get 6-8Mbps, but I had it at 2 locations as a single user so...it probably all depends on where you stay.

Since the upgrades my ADSL has become close to useless for large chunks of the day when I need it most.
I can't believe their project plan did not go like this:
Step 1: Upgrade exchange to handle larger volumes (install MSAN)
Step 2: If exchange can handle higher speeds then upgrade all the lines in that exchange.

It should be as simple as that right? They are making people wait for the 10mb lines, and yes although its a long wait, at least it is business as usual for all other customers in that exchange. But now because if the idiotic way that they did it everybody now sits with congested exchanges and are worse off than they were before the upgrades.
