It looks the same as the normal one???
No video calling - not that it necessary but should be standard on a 3G phone.

so that means Rendier you gonna have to sell your iPhones for R1000 to be competitive with the iPhone 3G ... :D

HE HE HE... all my iphones were sold out a month before they announced that the iphone is coming to South Africa.

Plus I highly doubt that vodacom will charge the $199 for the phone. If they do then I will be very glad for my fellow South African's because it is a great phone. BUT, I doubt they will let it go for so cheap.

i kinda doubt $199 also ... supply and demand ... if they do come out at that price, they wont be supply and guys will charge premiums for the phone

I doubt supply would be a problem, SA's a relatively small market globally and not many people here can afford phones even at $199.

Agreed. Trust vodacom to make the most simplest of transactions a nightmare and charge you 100% mark up.

Some people say that the $199 will be what you have to pay in, after signing a contract. So you get the phone on Weekender say and pay R2000. Does anybody know if this is the case?

Yes, that is most definitely the case.

Even if it is the case, it'll blow most other phones right out of the water. Not necessarily saying that the iPhone is better, feature-wise, than the other phones, but at a price like that (and considering that everyone always seems to "ooh" and "aah" over the iPhones), it's definitely going to become VERY popular.

Take, as an example, the SE W960i. 6 months down the line, and VC still want R2500 pay in on a Weekender. That's just ridiculous. Now if only MTN would cut a deal to get the phone...

The reason I'm confused is Jobs said they'd be decreasing the price of the phone from $399 currently to $199. You don't currently pay in $399 on top of the cost of the contract, it's the actual cost of the phone, which makes me think that $199 would also be the actual cost of the phone.

However, R2000 for such a kickass phone sounds almost too good to be true. If it actually goes for that price I can't see many people not getting one. And if Vodacom is the only supplier I'm sticking with them for ever and ever.

MTN Wont be able to Cut a deal.

I'm sure when Vodacom made the deal with apple something to the likes of "Can we be guaranteed exclusivity on the iPhone?" was asked and agreed on.

Apple make clever deals on their "must have" iPhone, as they have one hot product...so does vodacom.

I heard from a friend of mine at Vodacom that Vodacom is going to launch special iPhone contracts. The contracts will include data, free minutes (weekend/anytime depending on the contract) and bundled sms's. The iPhone will cost $199 +- on these special iPhone contracts.

As far as I can tell, it won't be unlimited data.

It's going to be similar to the blackberry contracts you can get.

I think we can all assume a few things:

1) It will only be available on vodacom.
2) It will only be available on Contract.
3) It won't be cheap. be realistic...
