Advantage of 64bit OS on a quad core vs 32 bit? - Looking to run Kubuntu/ OS X (if poss) and Win Xp Sp 2/3

well in regards to windows xp or vista 64 and 32

there is no advantage to have a quaddie it runs the same on both platforms

as for the rest havent a clue :)
 
So why should i bother running a 64bit system? Merely the fact that it recognizes more ram or? What are the advantages got kubuntu 7.10 and wondering if its worth it going for 64 bit version?

I believe the advantages are fairly academic at this point, but since you are asking:

More registers available to programmers.
Makes mapping large files to memory more efficient.
Boost speeds of double precision floating point operations.
It also has implications for the cryptography scene AFAIK.
Everyone's favorite 4GB RAM thingy.

There is a wiki about it somewhere, but the best way to understand it is to do some programming involving 5GB files.:sick:
 
beanie you have not tried windows xp 64 bit?

there is massive different in speed man

i dont put it down to cpu though

the difference with vista 32 and 64 bit is not as great though

well if you go vista, you should 64 bit for more memory
the advantage of having 4 gig mem in vista is it needs 4 gig mem to run smooth :)
 
i think logically speaking, there has to be a significant speed increase, since the CPU now reads 64 bits of data at a time, as opposed to 32 bits. so theoretically speaking, it should be twice as fast. also, the fact that you can use more RAM is a huge plus.
 
I'm running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate on one of my machines and I'm hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and it's 32-bit counterpart...

It does seem to do better with video editing, though :p

Used it a few years ago, after having struggled to find drivers for all my hardware I didn't experience a significant (if any) speed increase so back to 32-bit I went :D

I assume the drivers have matured so there should be a speed increase but when I used it there wasn't :)

nope your wrong beanie, companies did not produce drivers for winxp 64 bit as far as i know thats why i stopped using it

i had printers scanners sound card mobo and no drivers

no doubt xp pro 64 bit flew compared to 32 bit windows for me, it was like my system was on steroids

Currently 4GB ;)

*sigh* so Windows Vista wants more than 2GB to run well? I'll stick to Windows XP then ;)

Then you were lucky or I was extremely unlucky :D I wonder why they stopped producing drivers :confused:

ok cool. well i'm glad that i bought my pc recently, so i have 64 bit drivers. i'll be installing soon. it was kind of strange that this thread came about now.
 
beanie 2 gig runs xp well

so why would it run the latest os just as well

did windows xp run well when you have 256 meg ram from windows 98? heck no

you needed 512 meg or more for xp to run decent and a 1 gig to run well :)
