Laptop runs on flat for hours

LOL, this is a funny one... I've taken over my dad's old ASUS L7000-E Notebook, installed Windows XP SP 2 etc etc...

I left it to discharge totally, then charge for a full 24 hrs. After I unplugged it, Windows told me I have 5 min of battery life left, and it ever so elegantly proceeded to shut itself down. So I disabled the automatic shutdown on low battery feature and for the past hour and a half my laptop has been running perfectly with wibdows still claiming the battery is at 0%

You're lucky. Mine's battery is kaputt and needs replacing :(

Well, its not going to run flat if you turned off the warning, now is it!

if i am not mistaken, the L7000e has a battery calibration utility built into the bios.

go have a look under the power management tab.
