PC Power - Load Shedding Advice Wanted

In light of the load shedding fiasco, I am thinking of some options.

One thing I am thinking is: What is the power to the PC after it has gone via the PSU? Is it DC? If so, what level.

Can one run the PC off a battery (however large etc), and bypass the PSU?
I have seen special boards that are used as routers that do - but what is involved for a "normal" PC?

Advice appreciated - but, please remember that I am a fledgling with power - so be gentle! :D

the ATX plug has +12 - 12 +5 -5 +3 -3 so its not just one voltage i would recommend getting a DC to ATX PSU like we use at the highsites

What power does that run on? And battery life for a full PC (assume not a games monster, but a high end PC nonetheless)
