Can you guys give me some info on GW
Like what latency do you guys get on it in SA.
And what server should i join.
And is it as much fun as WOW.

-GW is free, apart from the purchase cost of the game
-GW has veeeery nice graphics compared to WOW
-GW PVP is balanced
-GW is rather big (world size)
-GW has chapter games, being;
* Prophecies (Orginal game - Chapter 1)
* Factions ( PVP inclined with 2 new classes - Chapter 2)
* Nightfall ( i havent played this 1 tbh, it has 2 more classes - Chapter 3)
** Eye of the North ( Correct me if im wrong, this is more of an expansion)
-The lvl limit is 20 as opposed to WOW's 70
-There are 6 core classes... Warrior, Monk (priest), Ranger (hunter), Necro (Part1 lock hybrid), Mesmer (part2 lock hybrid), Elementalist (Mage), with the other chapters, you get Ritualist, Assassin (rogue), Dervish (Sycthe wielding bad-a$$~ think of it as a ret pally), Paragon (pally hybrid)
-With each game you get 4 more char slots. To jump right into the pvp, you can make a lvl 20 PVP-only character... Either you can pvp to unlock skills for your pvp chars, or do the PVE side of the game and unlock skills like that (if you unlock a skill through PVP, your PVE char wont be able to use it)
-You can either own all 4 games, or just 1

I started GW before WOW, very interesting MMORPG tbh...
-In GW, everything is in its own instance to put it simply. You can either grp with players, or take AI npcs called henchmen. How you progress is, there are Missions (pretty much bits of the story on which ever Chapter you're on)
-The lag in GW is very different to WOW, when you lag, you cant move your char, and you look like you're running on the spot. Spells and Abilities are queued

You dont download patches or pay for subscriptions each month as you do in WOW, the kicker is downloading the maps (this can take from 500mb to 1,5gb of cap), either download it, or copy a friend's gw.dat file

I havent played GW in a while, so my knowledge is a bit rusty....

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page will help

To add to previous post.

Guildwars is PvP first, PvE second .

So if you liked Arena and Battlegrounds in WoW (and felt it was missing something) you'll like Guildwars 1000x more. You'll clearly see WoW just slapped BG/Arena on as a side-thought to have some "jump in" PvP.

Now, as for Guildwars, PvE sucks imho. There is NO seamless world where you run around and see other people. EVERYTHING is instances. Only in cities you see other people and pickup groups. Basically think WoW 5-man dungeons without any zones inbetween, you just jump straight into it directly from a city.
So if you solo level, you will level in an instance..you will not see anyone else until you go back to a city.

WoW is PvE first, and PvP second. PvE [dungeons,raiding,questing,gearing,professions] shines in WoW .

As for servers. Guildwars it's easy. There's the 3 regions [Europe,USA,Asia] , you join one of those. There's no "server" thing like WoW. Everything is integrated, so as long as you in the same region you can play together with others. BUT Guildwars even joined the regions with what they call "International Zone". So if for some reason you're US and someone is EU, then you can both join the International Zone and play together [however international zone was always quite deserted when i was there] .

Guildwars , max level is like 20 . So you don't grind like WoW. In fact you can roll a lvl 20 character from the start [obviously lacking gear and certain spells] and jump into PvP straight away. In WoW terms think rolling a lvl 70 character, customizing the spec and then doing WSG or Arena on day 1.

I have GW and haven't played in in ages since i got wow.

It's nice to play GW then go to wow, from Wow to GW you won't like it

1. The whole world is instance based
meaning: In the towns you see all the pretty people, the moment you exit a town, your alone with the hencemen or the group of 4 other guys you grouped up with. The gear and so forth is completely different to wow.

The PvP part of GW's is fun but appart from that, I promise you.... you won't like it ;)

Is number of jumps between "servers" still 5?

This is not true. You only get 4 char slots with the initial installation. All the rest you get 2 char slots at most and also depending on what edition you buy.

You can play with shaped or unshaped adsl, 56k, 64k isdn, hsdpa, 3g, iburst and even gprs.
A ping of 600-700ms is still playable in GW. You average about 3-6MB per hour of gameplay, depending where you are and what you are doing.
You dont download patches or pay for subscriptions each month as you do in WOW, the kicker is downloading the maps (this can take from 500mb to 1,5gb of cap), either download it, or copy a friend's gw.dat file
You will only download these maps when it is the first time you are going there, basically a on-demand thing. Because not everybody goes everywhere, so they will never need the files.
A way to bypass this is to do a -image switch after gw.exe. This will download all files onetime and you won't have to download files again, until a new build / update is released. Which is very small in comparison.

IMO, I prefer the PVE and INSTANCED worlds.
It' all about your opinion.
One thing though, PvP is definitely pwning WoW, no doubt. Balance ftw.
In fact PvE pwns WoW too (IMO of course)

As I said, your opinion this is BAD, for ME it is GOOD that it is instanced.
Choice (about who to have in your party) ftw
Is number of jumps between "servers" still 5?
No, they completely wiped this when they merged all the zones.
You can now travel from America, to Europe, to International and recently they even hooked up the Asian districts and I think there are more to come still, Korea I think, or Japan.
You don't have to change your "Home" zone anymore in your Account options. Travel has completely been opened.

Arena type matches in GW is 100x better than WoW. The classes is better balanced, but you wont escape from your normal cookie cutter builds that you are used to in WoW. Be aware however that most times (like any other games) there is overpowered classes and builds (anyone remember the SF ele, Spirit spam rits and then the spirit spam necros to name a few). You will also get the endless nerfs and buffs.

Where WoW however has one up on GW is the battlegrounds. GW also has something along similiar lines with their factions battles, but it comes nowhere close to the fun and mayhem of BG's.

Guild Wars PvP is superior to WoW's imho.

As dakeyras mentioned in his post, yes, there are builds that skyrocket to popularity, but updates are generally released on a weekly basis, meaning that if something is overpowered, it gets nipped in the bud quickly.

I loved the days of full ranger trap team :P

Apart from game play and everything ... there are a few points that GW could take from WoW ... (i played GW for 2 yrs then started WoW 2 weeks ago, so bear with me)

1) professions ... it's amazing how much fun you can have and money you can make while doing so when you choose different professions like mining/enchanting/leatherworking/skinning/alchemy/etc. which are totally class independent.

2) Auction House! - there's nothing quite as irritating as spammers in towns trying to sell their stuff. If GW had an auction house it would've been MARVELLOUS! So much better to get material instead of schlepping around to kill some lame monster for it. - having said that - GW, like WoW keep true to the persistent ones who do instances / collect the proper things themselves and get rewarded with better gear instead of being able to buy the best off the market.

3) AddOn packs ... these arent cheats, but tools to help you around better in WoW ... like a better mapping system , or auction helper for better price speccing, etc. it makes the game much more customizable and worthwhile

In GW's defense, i started out playing it on a dialup connection ... which is _VERY_ impressive.

1) Being addressed in GW2. A crafting system wouldn't work with the way Guild Wars is currently designed.

2) A revamped trade system is apparently coming in GW2 too.

3) Guild Wars does have mods, click here for more info.

Aye GW was rated nr 1 pvp system :)

cant wait for GW2 :D

oh nice to hear, Lydon!

GW2 is rumoured to be quite jacked up. Will it still be a once of payment or subscription based like WoW?

It should give some fierce competition if its once off.

any speculation on the release date ?

... I'll try find out more about it, but do you guys know if it still sticks to human classes only?

Races

Guild Wars 2 will introduce several new playable races. The five playable races announced so far are:

* Asura
* Charr
* Human
* Norn
* Sylvari

Different races will have different advantages and disadvantages, for example the Norn will be able to shapeshift into a half-bear half-human, with increased health and melee damage. It is presently not known what advantages other races will have.

Controls

The control system is going to be significantly changed (in particular mouse movement in the form "click to move" will be removed from the game), however target locking will still function. Guild Wars 2 will introduce a Z-axis to the game which will allow characters to jump over obstacles. Actions which have characters interacting with the environment, such as sliding and swimming will also be introduced.

New additions:
- Guild halls
- Pet stables
- more social realm instead of instance only runs outside of cities and outposts.

... so basically they're making a free World of Warcraft.

IT seems beta testing is out in the 2nd half of 2008...

hehe. thanks Devill - i posted without seeing yours 1st. Thanks for the info
