Switch to new SIM cards likely to hit a snag

The SIM cards will allow cellphones to store up to 1 gigabyte of information, a million times more than the current 34-kilobyte SIM cards, which have limited storage capacity.
It should be 32kb

It should be 32kb

nope kb=kilobit KB=kilobyte but it's 32KB indeed and not 34.

Most new cellphones use their internal memory today and not the simcards space, this could get interesting when simcards got above 64KB

“Cell C still doesn’t support 3G technology and Vodacom’s infrastructure is 14 years old. Some of them are laying out fibre-optic cables to improve capacity, but that needs to be accelerated.”

What a pointless article. Just because Vodacom's network is 14 years old, does not mean the technology is 14 years old!

I think 32k are discontinued... 64k is the new minimum.

I can just imagine the networks will soon be able to store ads on them [!ooops, they'll probably do it now]

there are quite a few inaccuracies in that article. as far as i know the first sim cards available in SA were 4k not 16k. and i have never heard of "GPRS global positioning".

Recently I was in Italy and had to get a prepaid sim. As a topup user, vodafone passport was not available to me there.

In anycase, the prepaid sim card you buy over the counter is 128k

The first SIM cards to enter the market had a capacity of up to 16KB with functionality limited to phone calls and text messaging. Current technology allows for Multimedia Messaging Service and GPRS global positioning.
Should be GPS.

It was 4k then 8k then 16k(Wap) then 32k(GPRS) now 64k(3G) and 128k(HSDPA).

GPRS Global Positioning is GPS that works through GPRS/3G/HSDPA.
Like on the N82 and BB8310 and other devices.

No, JK8 what you're thinking of is called aGPS or assisted GPS.

Which attempts to triangulate your rough position from the three nearest tower which helps the GPS to get a quicker lock.

Nope... in cellphones which is the what the article is about. There a GPS module and no maps on the phone, It needs a GPRS connection to retrieve maps. Hence GPRS Global poitioning.

The new SIM cards will have features such as Internet connectivity, flash memory, address book, calendar back-up, messaging, teleconferencing, file transfers, chat services and gaming.

Large amounts of Internet connectivity will only happen when prices come down to be affordable :)

But most of the phones already offer that functionality - and you probably won't be able to "upgrade" a Nokia 3330 that way :)

Mmmmm I doubt a sim card can have all of that built in, it can facilitate those features by making it a smoother exerience... but to basically make a memory card sim card? Way to much money and not worth it.
