Well, so it continues.
We all saw similar articles the other day - now it looks like it will go ahead.
SA is fast becoming a haven for criminals - and the rest of the world is beginning to notice.

The door is being shut because corrupt Home Affairs officials have been dishing out genuine passports to people smugglers, foreign asylum seekers and — allegedly — suspected terrorists wanting to enter Britain.

That "allegedly" is out of place - just by the way. Since terrorism is such a weighty word, the Times appears to be covering their own ass. I seriously doubt the HA official selling a passport for R500 cares who the hell he is selling it to.

And yet the minister in charge continues without accountability.
Her department is in financial ruins, her officials corrupt, foreign countries view her passports as highly suspect, and she keeps her job.

ZA ftl.

Pathetic even at the hight of Apartheid you could still go to the Uk without a visa.Luckily I'm out of here on the 1st of March. Just a pity I'm still stuck with this worthless passport for a couple of years.

As a result, British immigration experts said, the South African passport was “no longer worth the paper it’s written on”.

Says it all.

Shows the extent to which SA infrastructure and institutions have disintegrated.:sick:

I guess its worth getting the kids their UK passports now too.

Here is the UK version...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7192812.stm

One of the UK's biggest immigration scams has been unearthed after a series of trials.
Thousands of Indian nationals were brought to England illegally using fake South African passports.

AP: Terrorists obtain S. Africa passports
(Agencies)
2004-07-28 09:24

Al-Qaeda militants and other terrorists traveling through Europe have obtained South African passports, and authorities believe they got them from crime syndicates operating inside the government agency that issues the documents.

The illicit acquisition of the passports, which allow travel through many African countries and Britain without visas, sent shock waves through South Africa after one top police official said "boxes and boxes" of the documents were discovered in London.

I guess South Africa is on the American's 'naughty' list

Congrats UK.. finally grew some balls..

I am awaiting for our politicians to start ranting about the "racist westerners".

As British immigration said, our passports arent worth the paper they're written on -- our government isnt worth the oxygen they breath

I wish people would stop painting such a grim picture. It's not ONLY South Africans that are going to start finding it more difficult to get into the UK than in the past, but ALL common wealth countries. They even stopped employing foreign trainee doctors in the UK, because there aren't enough jobs left for their citizens. Personally, I think that this is only going to last a few years, since about half of their doctors received foreign qualifications and without the likes of us, their medical system would be nonexistent. I agree with the comments on the UK finally growing some family jewels though. Why should they give their resources away for free? At least make it slightly more difficult to get into the country.
Personally, I'll be applying for permanent residency as soon as I have my degree. Not to go live there, but, you know, it might be useful at some point.

You missed the point entirely - they are stopping us from going with out Visa's because of HA corruption - not because of a "swamp of foreigners".

Anyways, even if we were 1 of say 20 countries to have this problem - it DOES NOT MAKE IT "OK".
It is damned disgusting, and typical of Africa.

one of my ex work colleagues bought his SA citizenship for R20k after 6 months of being in the country with the intention of going to the UK afterwards, after reading this article i think he may have been ripped off..

No, I get that, but frankly, I'm sick and tired of being depressed about our corrupt country and the fact that I can't get out unless I'm happy to throw away the last two years of my life, so I was just trying to look on the brighter side a bit. You crushed that though :( :p

That does not make it acceptable for one. It’s very bad.
What do you not understand in the quote?

British immigration experts said, the South African passport was “no longer worth the paper it’s written on

Oh, sorry another pro ANC dreamer, thus would never understand the seriousness of such a decision.

Zim was part of the Commonwealth just a few years ago. I suppose we will follow the same fate (exit) rather sooner than later.

The "second person" always gets "processed quicker".

Like children - parents are normally "more extreme" with the first one than the second.
The world learned a lesson from Zim - and laid precedents. We will be barred quicker than they were - when the signs become apparent.

For the record, I'm definitely NOT pro-ANC. In fact, I hate them a whole lot and I think my dog and the neighbour's pet monkey could do a better job of ruling this country. You people seem to almost get excited about the fact that we're going down the drain, and currently we're in the whirlpooly bit right before you enter the abis. I'm just pi##ed off that I'm still stuck here until at least the end of the year and don't really have a choice about it. Ideally, I would've never come back to SA if I knew what was going to happen.

In some ways - yes.
It is similar to watching a friend make really bad decisions, and you warning them. And they get all uppity and tell you to p1ss off.
And then, they crash - and come to you for help. And you get that [unpleasant]feeling of "I told you so". But you help them out anyways, because they admitted they made a mistake, and they are your friend.

Except, in the case of ZA, the "admission" will never happen - so there will never be the chance to mend bridges and build up.

And your friend has a gun pointed at your head and the mistake he's going to make is pulling the trigger.

Good idea from the UK Government
