Personally I'm opposed to coalitions, solely on the basis that if I wanted to be associated with a particular party, then I would vote for that party. I think the leaders of opposition parties go into coalitions that their voters would not have approved of for some or other reason.

Your views on coalitions? Or is it anything goes as long as it is not the ANC?

I agree with you on your basis sox. I didn't want to vote for 3 or 4 parties merged together because they were obviously seperate due to their views.

That said, I would currently vote for a coalition purely to oppose the ANC majority, if I infact bother to vote at all.

I agree with you on coalitions, but the ANC has a bunch of them and they use their might to push through their policies... So why not the opposition parties all coming together to try and get some of their ideas through the ANC blockade?

Eventually I think you will see the ANC as one party and than another opposition party coming in to the scene ( a mix of all the smaller groups?). This way maybe SA can have a true democracy, rather than what it has now. Wishful thinking? Time will tell.

But what guarantee do you have that the policies that you believed in and hence voted for party X, will be carried forward with a coalition of parties X, Y and Z?

That to me just does not make any sense.

Your councillor/MP could just cross the floor anyway. No guarantee they'll back their own party either, even if it wasn't a coalition. :/

I don't have any guarentee which is why I dislike coalitions.

The reason I would have voted for X was that it opposed the policies that I didn't agree with from party A.

The fact that I still disagree with party A's policies will cause me to vote for either X, Y or Z or a coalition XYZ if I have no other choice.

Anything can be better than the current majority.

African politics: you vote against the party you want to lose.

European politics: you vote for the party you want to win.

Explains why the Dark Continent will never have proper democracy.

Two points of view.
Coalitions are bad - no doubt. I am NOT willing to be involved with the ACDP for example. Or the FF+.
However, given a choice between an all-powerful ANC and having to temporarily listen to the undemocratic rantings of a "Christian" party, I would take the latter.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

OT, and by no means a personal attack.:)

What does it solve to vote for a party purely becuase they are not party A? IMO you should vote for a party that you reckon would bring the most value to your life.

It is often the same :D

I vote for the party most against the "leaders" - my family always has.
I am too young (just) to have voted in an election prior to 1994. But my family always voted DA/DP. Why? Because they were not the Nats. And after that, because they are not the ANC.

Given two parties of equal strength - as in the USA - then, yes. Vote for the party you are most likely to directly benefit from, or that has your best interests at heart.

I would vote IFP next year were they the stronger of the opposition.
Hell - I would even vote ACDP - although that would be demoralising.

When you have multiple parties with more or less equal representation in parliament, you should find that there is more accountability. In our current situation, the ANC goes forth unchallenged in every single sector of government. That is the worst possible scenario.

Agreed. Theoretically democracy works on the basis of a majority party, an opposition that is comparable +/- 10% difference in votes and independents or minority party. These independents or minority party can swing the vote in favour of either the majority or the opposition. This requires the majority party doesn't just put forth drivel and self-gratifying acts and laws.

Agreed. However, the means of achieving that balance are what oppositions parties in this country are getting horribly wrong. IMO.

Instead of actively trying to capture the ANCs support base, they continually believe that coalitions are the way to go.

Yes. And No.

The problem is that the majority of non-ANC voters are more like the ideal you mentioned - vote for the party most interesting in serving one's needs.

This makes the situation difficult. Some people vote FF+, some DA - because these parties align with their views etc.

The majority of the ANC voters will vote ANC do or die. And it is not just a race thing - the IFP is way under supported - why?

Zanu-PF vs MDC.

Zanu-PF vs MDC.

I really do not get it -I just wish someone could tell me. I promise to just quietly accept the answer - but I am REALLY very much curious.

I can tell you why I will not vote ACDP or FF+, and why I vote DA - and have done so.

OT I have yet to see you personally attacking anyone sox. (not that I read every thread - as you can see by my join date I just lurk :D )

As stated by other posters I would do that if we had a true democracy in SA which in my opinion we don't.

I would choose to vote the lesser of the two evils I see even if that had to be a coalition that I don't agree with.

That said, the last time I voted was 89 and 94. Haven't bothered since.
