The exam results and personal details of every 14-year-old in England are to be put on an electronic database for the rest of their lives.

Under Government plans to be unveiled today, each pupil will be assigned a unique number which they will keep even after they leave school.

Employers and colleges will be able to use this number to access students' records on the internet to check if they are telling the truth about their qualifications.

It is hoped there will ultimately be a numbered database for every citizen aged over 14 years.

Errrmmm... I got assigned an ID number in High School... it can be used to find a helluvalot of info on me in state databases... there are many reasons for me to not want to live in 'ol Blighty but this is not one of them :-)
 
I don't see the problem in that and we should adapt it here to cut down on the CV fraud.

Collect as much information you want on me, just don't inconvenience me.

Have a look at all those cookies on your PC, keeping track of what you browse to place the right advertisement when you visit their sites :D
 
Not sure what the fuss is about. Honest people will honestly provide their correct details - and fraudsters no longer can.

In fact - I would PREFER that - I had a moer of a time trying to track down my matric certificate a while back. Had it been online - w00t!

And, for the record, a good qualifications and verification company can find out a whole lot about you, already.

If you've got nothing to hide, why would it be a problem? People who lie about qualifications devalue them for those of us who earned them honestly

It has nothing to do with honesty nor anything to hide, it has to do with the Right to Privacy.
My life is my business, not anybody else's, including the company i work for, if my post school qualifications are in order, that is enough, i dont see what right anybody has digging into my past, with regards schooling, when i left school 10 years or more ago, nor do i see any legimate reason for it.
So I was asked to leave 3 schools, and expelled from another, or arrested for car theft at 15, or bust for drugs at 14, it has nothing to do with my current job, so they dont have the right to that information, yet to you lot, it would be OK.
So in what way would that knowledge help me in life ?, it would hinder me, because it would be "public", and accessable.
No!, it would mean that some infringements, or juvenile deliquency at 14 or older, would always be there for people to see, and people would be judged accordingly, no matter how much they may change as they got older, and it would constantly be used against them, or held in a negative light, thereby hindering their chances later in life

These sort of records infringe on the individuals Right to Privacy.

You sign a waiver and allow the prospective employer to verify your claim to educational qualifications, bankruptcy, and lack of a criminal record. This is not an invasion of your rights - you give permission. By the same token, nobody is obliged to employ you if you refuse to disclose this information and give permission. Your choice.

And whilst you may be a fine upstanding pillar of the community, it may shock you to know that some people are less than totally honest. Think how things could turn out if you needed (heaven forbid) open heart surgery and I had the job because I lied about my qualifications and thought I had learnt enough by watching ER.

But you are right about the validity of your school transcript 10 years later. But why hide it? It is what it is and if the company thinks your matric results are important then, well you are better off without that job.
 
"Right to Privacy" is all very well and fine - except it is used as a shield by criminals.
Stuff that. Almost everyone has a few skeletons somewhere - big deal.
We will learn to overlook the odd wart. And if a company cannot do so, to bad.
I would rather someone knew that I smuggled a six pack of beer into school in std 6 - than allow a director of a major bank to lie about her credentials.

More likely you'd be branded for life as someone with drug abuse and criminal tendencies, and treated accordingly.
 
With just your name, and an idea of your age, I could get your ID number fairly easily - anyone with a criminal bent could do so quite easily.
With your ID Number, I can get a full credit profile from ITC etc.
I can also get your qualification verification done at KrollMIE.

With a little bit of underhandedness, I can get your life history in front of me within a day.
And should you have a Facebook account, I can dig out the details I would need for probably 90% of all "security questions" the banks ask. First school, favourite colour, dog's name.....

This "privacy protection" garbage is just that - garbage.

not leaked.... LOST! They copied personal info on to a CD and then used a COURIER to send the CD to another Govt department.

The CD never arrived. :D
 
Overseas companies go to SAQA to verify your qualifications. Same principle.

Exactly - people do not realise how much personal info is publicly available about them.
I have been in the "personal info" field for over a decade, and the quantity of information about a person that can be mined from (a) database(s) is enormous.
