Pupils recovering after 'racial incident'

The two teenagers stabbed in an apparent racially motivated school fight have been released from hospital and are recovering at home.

Wynand Botes,17, and Wikus van der Merwe, also 17, were each stabbed three times outside Hoerskool Acasia on Friday.

Wikus was released from Pretoria Academic hospital later that day while Wynand was released on Saturday because doctors had to treat one of his lungs, which had collapsed.

Police have arrested three boys in connection with the incident.

They were released into their parents' care, but will appear in the Pretoria North magistrate's court on Wednesday.

Wynand said he was joking with a friend, throwing water at him, when a few drops landed on his alleged attacker.

"He shouted at me that he was going to get me after school. He was waiting for me outside the school gates. When he pulled out a knife I punched him. While we were fighting someone stabbed me in the back," he said.

Wikus said he saw the commotion and went to his friend's rescue. "I felt the stab to my head. I am not sure what happened because it happened so quickly," he said.

Wynand was stabbed in the back, shoulder and leg while Wikus was stabbed in the head, arm and side.

Wynand's mother Marianne said her son was in a lot of pain. "One of his lungs collapsed so they had to put pipes in it. He must rest for a while, he doesn't look good and must go back for a check-up," she said.

Wikus's stepfather Pieter Nienaber said his son was doing better. "He's going to have to rest for a few days and not go to school, but otherwise he is fine," he said.

Marianne said she was upset about the matter and worried about her younger child, who attends the same school. "The school must ensure that the children are safe.

"Wynand is in matric so it's his last year, but my other child has three more years at the school. If they can't be safe I'll worry constantly," she said.

Parents have arranged a protest outside the school where they will call on education officials to ensure the safety of their children.

They were due to gather at the school from about 7am on Monday.

I'm not so surprised by the content of the story, but rather the headline. Nowhere in the article does it even mention a specific "racial motive".

I'm not saying it wasn't, but a some evidence would be nice. :rolleyes:
 
It probably was not a "racial incident" - remember racism only goes one way in our country!

I guess the attackers were black and the victims white...there was something here on myADSL about such cases not being flagged as racially motivated...guess they heard your calls;)
 
The only thing that would make it racial, would be if the attackers were black, but mentioning that wouldn't be very pc. Will have to wait for the followup story, if any, for more info.

Correct, maybe they are just preparing the public for twhat is to come in the media. They obviously know but cannot say yet.
 
Something just occured to me, we are all assuming that these kids are White, they could be coloured? Not that it makes a difference.

This just seems like a modern school yard bully incident. Thank god, I made it out before kids starting arming themselves. We are heading for the US-like metal detectors at schools.

No it will be only racial if the victims were black and attackers white...

PTA-east is a war-zone with blacks murdering innocent people (including pensioners) - but that is not 'racial incidents'... EVEN when the attackers make statements like "we're going to kill all white people"
when a white 18yr shoots 3 black people that is clearly racial...

In SA racism is clearly only one-way!

Bullying? Attacking people with knives is bullying? In what neighbourhood did you grow up in?
 
sox - that call has some credence if one goes with the belief that all racially motivated actions in South Africa are white on black.

from what is reported in the story, it would appear that a person of one race attacked another on an issue that doesn't seem to be race related though.

One where I needed to learn to fight, or run faster than the guy trying to whip my @ss. :D

No seriously though, it was not bad in my days, stabbings were rare, but these days, these kids have access to so many weapons! They can buy knives at a cigarrete shop! And now with parents being careless with their guns. You have to worry about some bully or some kid that has been bullied one too many times, coming with a gun to school.

Had a "incident" at my school once. The target of the bully snapped, and has beaten the bully to a bloody "pulp". Nobody bullied that nerd again. Was funny though. Using weapons is for n00bs :p

When I was at school, we NEVER had stabbings...Frankly, i NEVER heard about stabbings in white schools...
