Police say a gang of 13 is suspected of an attempt to rob a security guard outside an Engen garage in Buitenkant Street, Vredehoek on Monday which ended in a shootout that sent bystanders running for cover.

The guard, 35, was shot three times in the stomach as he was about to collect money. His attackers managed to escape.

Police spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said about 13 attackers had been involved. Officers were searching for them.

Steyn said two security guards from a private company had been in their service vehicle, an Isuzu bakkie, when they stopped at the Engen garage in upper Buitenkant Street.

As one got out of the bakkie to collect money, a white Mercedes-Benz had drawn up next to him and the occupants of the car had shot at the security guard and bakkie a number of times.

The guard had returned their fire, Steyn said.

They had then driven off in the Mercedes-Benz, and the guard had been rushed to hospital, where he was reported to be in a stable condition.

The gun the attackers used was found at the scene. Steyn said its serial number had been filed off.

Shortly after the shooting the Mercedes-Benz had been found abandoned in Alexandra Avenue, Oranjezicht, and police were investigating whether a second getaway vehicle had been used, she said.

A shocked witness said she had been in Buitenkant Street when she heard gunshots and saw a bakkie being hit by bullets.

A section of the street, including the District Six Museum and the front entrance of the police station, had been cordoned off.

Crime scene experts scoured the road, and the Isuzu bakkie could be seen with a cracked back window and a dented passenger seat window with a web of cracks where a bullet had struck it.

A robbery case was being investigated.

Do security guards not wear flak jackets ?!

Some companies do equip their members with bulletproofs others dont, most fidelity guards dont wear bullet proofs while SBV guards do.

Surely if you have to provide factory workers with protective clothing then you have to provide your gaurds with vests?

13 people in one car? A little confusing... SE 500 are big, but not that big!

Why is a robbery being investigated?

I didn't read anything about money being stolen - just a heap about attempted murder.

u have to investigate the attempted robbery, unless u want the same gang on the streets where they can do it again.

I think most of them do wear bullet proof vests but the problem is that those things only cover the chest and the top of the stomach where the vital organs are.

Thing is, nowadays the baddies use Pantzer Piercing Bullets...will make peanuts out of those vests

obvious question..how many of the members of the gang have a matric?

solve the cause, not the symptoms.

Had they been bright enough to get a matric, they might have got away with the money:D

had our education system been better, they prob would not have been in a gang. id honestly like to see statistics on criminals convicted and look at the % of matriculants.

pandor is happy to straddle mediocre benchmarks because its still better than bantu education.

amazing how cash in transit vehicles always get hijacked.
Its the chrome rims on those things.

I figure they should transport the money in taxis and let the driver pick a random route. Maybe even get a few big ladies that are always in the taxis to sit on the cash.:D

I think you missed my point so I'll explain again.

I think that murder is a worse crime than robbery. Guns were fired. People were shot at. So, why are they investigating an attempted robbery and not attempted murder?
