51 hangings in Iran this year

51 hangings in Iran this year

Tehran - Iran has hanged two convicted killers, one of them an Afghan, in a prison in the central city of Isfahan on Tuesday, the Fars news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Afghan man, identified as Mirza, 26, had been found guilty of stabbing to death an Afghan girl identified as Halimeh who refused to marry him about four years ago.

The second man who was sent to the gallows was identified as Akbar F, 24, who was convicted of killing the 68-year-old owner of a jewellery store and the theft of five kilograms of gold.

The hangings bring to at least 51 the number of executions in Iran this year. The number of executions soared last year to 298, according to a tally.

Capital offences in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, serious drug trafficking and adultery. Iran currently makes more use of the death penalty than any country apart from China.

Many executions last year took place in public but judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi in January ordered that no executions should take place in public without his prior approval.

There have been no reports of any public hangings since then. - Sapa-AFP
