I feel like I am being ripped off here! ISDN was ok, but took to long to download, and more of an effort to make sure that your call doesn't go before or after the 7pm/7am rule. I then got ADSL, thinking that I have no problem with the cap as long as the alternate route gives me 3/5 kilobytes a second. I went past the cap on the weekend, ADSL has been reduced to absolute crap! Most of the TCP/IP socket based connections timeout, HTTP downloads at less than 250 bytes a second.

What's worse is that the proxy service, cache.saix.net, has been barred, thus not allowing access to previously cached data.

Does anybody know what Telkom has got planned for this service? An early burial?, and what has been Telkom's response been to this website?

Thanks for using this forum.

We have contacted Telkom on many occasions, but as you know it is not easy to get a good answer from them. The main problem as far as I can see is the International bandwidth. They only make limited bandwidth available to ADSL users. Since they don’t guarantee anything, they can give all users 1 Meg (which they did inititally!!) to share. It currently stands at 25 Megs, but it is by far not enough. Since they don’t make any profit on better International bandwidth, it is tough to convince them to increase it.

Our aim is to get all users together to have some say. If all users agree to certain terms, they have no option but to listen to us.

I am shocked at the low speeds when you reach the 3 Gig cap. I think (was the case initially) they put all users on a 1 Meg pipe that reached the limit. Again, all done to prevent us using ADSL properly! I always watch my downloads since I use ADSL for my studies, and cannot afford to go any slower…

Thanks again for the feedback. We will include the complaints in our correspondence with them. We assure you that no names will be used, and that our users will always stay anonymous!

Spoke to DSL support, and got the 'not gauranteed' and 'we're upgrading/restructuing our network' BS. I thought the support staff were rather rude. Has Telkom started to read this support web site?

Hi again Chris

This site has only been up for a few days, and there is still very little action here. I am currently promoting it, and would appreciate is if all users can simple let other users they know inform about this site.

Be assured that they will soon take notice. We have everything in place to launch an active campaign. We fund all of this ourselves (as you can see no adds etc), and all we ask of users to help us is to post here and use the polls.

Thanks for the support! Telkom will have to answer to your questions soon!

I sincerely hope they find out about this website as so far that ADSL service line is either engaged or they give me a standard reply that you know they have put together for the myriad of complaints they get everyday! And to fair to the guys on the line I would do the same as they don't have power to change the service.
 
Hi all

I was on the brink of getting myself an ADSL connection, but thanks to your guys, my money was not wasted on this crap that telkom calls “broadband”.
I am now very [V] cause I’m going to have to bare with my 56k dialup for a few more months, or at least until I see some positive postings here.

Here are some promotion ideas to promote your site if you have not already thought about it. Hope it helps. Hope you don't mind me giving you ideas.

- Create a button that people can place on thier web site to link to your site. Have the text read 'Improve Internet Access in South Africa' on it or something to that effect. Invite people to come and participate with the button.

- This will probably be a lot of work, but maybe create an ISP guide listing all the ISP's in South Africa - maybe with a type of rating or something. Maybe even create a catalogue of internet access related web sites for South Africa. This way google.com and the other search engines have something to crawl so that it can pop up when people search for ISP related stuff in google.com - You need relevent content. The more you have the more people will find your web site. They also call this doorway pages if I'm not mistaken. Also save the pages of your forum and link them from some pages so that crawlers can crawl the pages of the forums. You can invisibly link to forum pages using 1x1pixel size images.

- If you're clued up on Search Engines, you can create a page targeted with the word Telkom, so that when people type in the search term Telkom on google.com that your site pops up within the top 10 results. I've done this successfully in the past with other web sites. If you want, I can attempt create such a page for you. Been a while back and I might have become rusty with this type of thing. I think google.com might have changed the way it ranks pages as of late. Lately they are starting to use link popularity. This means that they will tie in relevance together with the amount of sites linking to your site - making it a good idea to have people link to your site.

- The more content you have relative to ISP and South Africa related internet info the better people will be able to find your site.

Thanks for the advice. It is most welcome.

We already rate high on Ananzi with an "adsl" search, and is nr 1 with a "telkom adsl" search. Google is a different matter. I believe that page content is of great importance there as well...will look into it. Willl also work on the other ideas.

Why will telkom not admit or provide ADSL ANNEX B (ADSL OVER ISDN) When i called the support centre and enquired they had no clue as to what i was talking about. I had to downgrade my ISDN line to an analogue connection before they would install adsl.

Well, this was the same year I returned to SA, and, thanks to Telkom's spectacular offerings, was also the year I joined this forum. I actually stayed on ISDN for ages before changing to ADSL, was quite a cheap option for torrents/dc++ at that stage. Amazing how the 3gig cap thing has persisted 6 years on.
