We decided to install ADSL in our office after seeing our monthly internet line bill sky rocket (we run a huge web site based in the USA which requires daily upload which can takes hours). We thought that regardless of Telkom's very poor ADSL speed by international standard, and even if the connection speed is half 512/256, that would be okay - costs would be capped and we still would be working faster than on the modem route.
To cut a long story short, trying to get out of SA during peak times is near impossible (although it does seem to have gotten better recently). Trying to publish a web site from say Microsoft Frontpage is impossible during working hours.
We got hold of a Telkom employee (we have his name and email address) on the 0800 375 375 number, who told us that that if we had asked him, he would have not recommended us getting ADSL, because of its unreliablity. He also said that Telkom's ADSL offer was not in fact intended for international use (what's the point then!)
We then challenged him on whether we were now in fact looking at an issue of lack of service or a legal issue. He pointed out that all Telkom's fine print says that services are not guaranteed. This may be so, but it surely is unethical to continue selling a service that quite clearly doesn't offer what it says - regardless of fine print.
I suppose all I can do right now is hope for the best - and let all prospective ADSL subscribers know (in every possible media) that they are in for a rude shock if they think they will be arriving in the promised land!
