Hi guys,

I'm considering buying a Dual Purpose bike (Think BMW Dakar, 1200GS, Honda Varadero, Honda Transalp). I'm 22 and haven't bought a vehicle before (still driving what my dad *thankfully* gave me at 18).

I intend to spend no more than R60k on the total package. I have some things that I'm not sure of though, and I hope some of you might be able to shed some light on it for me...

1. I want to by the bike on a 36-54 month finance option. How do banks decide whether I can buy it or not. Must the bike be younger than 5 years, etc.

2. Lets say I buy a Honda Varadero, 2004 Model, R59k, what could I expect to pay for insurance

3. I have no gear, e.g. helmets, jackets, kevlar pants...etc..how much does this type of stuff cost? I'm not interested in spending tens of thousands of rands....

I have riding experience. Done quite a few trips on my dad's 1200GS and Varadero (before he sold it) so I'm not new to biking, just the buying a bike myself part which is a bit grey to me....

Any help appreciated...

1. I think it's 2 or 3 years for bike. They treat us worse than car drivers.

2. Basically the same as a car. The big factor is not that it's a bike, it's that you're young so you'll pay more. Go for 3rd party / Fire/ Theft if you feel brave enough. It's a lot cheaper than Comprehensive.

3. Helmets. R1000- R10000, Jackets. R750+, Gloves R250. Pants, get some rainproofs, R100
