ADSL - and what i have heard....
I was speaking to one of the tech guys at adsl when i had yet another fault... He told me that the default factory settings for the Marconi (Telkom provided) routers are set up for singapore or japan or sumthing. And the DNS servers etc are all IP addresses of those servers there. Now telkom doesnt tell u to change that when u set up ur router... why?
Next. These routers are so krap that they dont even allow u to specify dynamic ports. But i mean even if u could (dynamic ports used for voice and video) telkom doesnt care, cuz those ports on their servers are so slow that u get 2fps anyway. They say it is "optimised" for HTTP.
I have tried to browse during the day, and it is so slow it isnt even worth it. It makes u think... what are all these ppl doing when they go to work.. suring not work, cuz the internet is so conjested.
My DSL has been down 3 times... First time was a week after it was in. Its a funny story... normal telkom was going around putting some new lines in, but to do that they test the line by sending a pulse down the line, well they hit my line and BOOM went my modem!
Dont forget that the guy who came to fix it wasnt properly equipped... he had a laptop with a faulty ethernet card, a USB modem of his own, and a half working ethernet one. And i am standing around the whole day watching this guy and telling him it is the modem.
Then was the week where they un-expectidly turned off the ADSL for lotsa ppl, cuz they were re-setting the DSLAMS - they did it on a thursday and that saturday! So no DSL those two days.
Even tho telkom says that they have "No Garentee" maybe they should just give a better overall service! And if they want to give us this rubbish service then not charge us an arm and a leg for it.
I have been reading a lot on this site so far and see everyone has the same complaints. But if there arent enuff ppl for DSl then why is there sucha waiting period, and why are there ppl getting it installed EVERY DAY. No mistake, telkom is making afat profit off DSL. I read that topic about how much it all costs, well with the quality of our equipment here i wouldnt be surprised if it was donated to South Africa by a country who upgraded theirs!!!
Well i have had my ADSL for coming on almost 2 months now. I was capped last week and i cant get onto MSN, hotmail, microsoft's site, or any international site for that matter....
