I used to have cache.saix.net as my dialup proxy. What do we use for Telkom's DSL cache?

I phoned them about it and the support dude I spoke with says that ADSL has no caches. They had but not anymore. It probably has something to do with their 3gig cap.

Doing away with cache servers is absurd! [:(!] Isn't the point to conserve bandwidth?

Even though it may seem like there is no caching, there in fact is. They're using a transparent caching facility that automatically caches.

I figured this out when I tried using Dynu's Basic DNS service. Whenever I asked it to update with my new IP from server side (am running NAT behind the router), it came back as the caching server IP as the updates took place over port 80. On a side note, I solved this by telling the program to update my IP over port 1025 instead, which bypassing the automatic proxying of port 80.

I also phoned telkom about which proxy server i could use, they replied that there is already a proxy server (cache.saix.net) ...its a transparent proxy. However if anyone has noticed it doesn't work or is disabled for dsl users. I found by using other anonymous proxies in S.A. i can at least open web pages after the 3gb cap (its slower than a modem, but i can at least open pages). Obviously, telkom noticed this little loophole and therefore limits the use of their proxy server.

I have just confirmed, my ADSL connection uses a cache server, it is forced by their transparent proxy to 198.54.202.2 which used to be cache.saix.net but since recently is now 196.25.255.2 ? Some changes on their side, hopefully for the better ?

Go to http://whatismyip.com and you will see your browser comes from a different ip address to what ipconfig reports.

find a public proxy and use them(Use google). There are slow and fast one's.
I am using them and definitely gettting better response than using a modem.

I used to use cache.saix.net from when I got my adsl at start of march. I always had the full 56KB when viewing and dling. This is cause cache.saix.net itself is not throtled. I think it is quite obv why they stuck an access list on it, as otherwise you could dl at full 512k before and after the cap at all hours. I then switched to the mweb proxies however these soon had access lists put on them aswell.

ONLY ADSL users are blocked from these "public" proxies.
