View Full Version : 3 GB Limit

Although Telkom does limit your monthly traffic to 3GB's, did you know that they do allow you to have more than one account per ADSL line @ R 219 per month - i.e. you can switch between accounts when you reach your 3GB limit on one account. They do not advertise this, but if you push them they will do it for you.

I have found the above to be the best solution to the 3 GB cap. I wish though that Telkom would provide you the option of pre-paying for the bandwidth you need. This will allow Telkom to generate the revenue needed to pay for the bandwidth that is consumed by the ADSL subscribers. Imagine if you could pre-pay for 12GB of traffic per month.
what an archaic solution, to switch between accounts! Clumsy, should not be necessary.

ISDN is better value. Although it is slower I can get up to 5GB a month down with a monthly expenditure of about R650 (I have a R7.00 call plan). ADSL doesn't make sense unless its limit is 5-6GB, because then I at least have what I have now, but at a higher speed.

Also Telkom Internet does not provide static IP's which make other ISP offerings more compelling.

You can get away from the 3GB limit by simply not using TelkomInternet. Nobody is forcing you to use TelkomInternet, most people do because ADSL Internet access is cheaper than other ISP's, but then live with the limit. I don't like the limit and think it should be higher, but we should also remember they are not a monopoly in the ISP space.[8D]

As far as I know, the ISP's have NO control over the cap. You will be capped no matter which ISP you use.
It makes no difference at which ISP you are. We are all using Telkom, whether they are your ISP or not. We are hence all capped.

If I bought 2 accounts, this gives me 6 gigs of fast ADSL however there is another little advantage I think.
I can't see why I may not buy 2 accounts...use up the one account and dedicate that capped account to local usage..and when I want to do international connections utilise the second account. In this way it is possible to limit the amount of usage wasted by local uses by switching accounts depending on the need. Would it work this way or would Telkom merely add another 3 gigs to your existing account ?
Not a resolution...merely stickey tape to hold together a leaky boat hoping a solution comes.

Telkom does actually give you a totally new account. They don't reload your account. It is frustrating though to change your settings between the accounts ( If you have the Ethernet Router Pots installed ). With the USB modem you can simply create 2 dialup accs. in WinXP.
Unfortunately I'm not willing to pay even more for a bigger cap/unlimited cap. I think we are paying enough compared to the rest of the world. At this price we deserve an uncapped service!
