Firstly thank you very much to the creator of this forum. I searched long and hard to find somewhere I could get feedback on the ADSL service before I took the plunge.
It seems like 90% of the people I've come across are less than satisfied with the ADSL service. Due to the fact that I am in need of accessing the net during the day, (against better judgement) I have decided to take the plunge. Touch wood we don't have any problems, my ADSL connection should be active this afternoon.
I've been with WOL Satellite for 3 years now. It took me a full year before I could say their service was up to standards. Needless to say it was a miserable year for me as I'm a VERY big downloader.
It's going to be difficult to get used to the cap, but I had to make a choice - downloads or having the necessary access during the day. Work won! arrgghh.
All I ask for is a connection with speeds as fast as my Satellite. (Around 10KB/sec) I don't expect true ADSL speeds. That would be nice, but whats the point if you've got the 3GB cap. That would really be a tease.
So, now we await Telkom's arrival.
The outcome in due course.....
(United we stand)
ADSL is a great technology and can be excellent. That is why we have this forum. If Telkom can just improve the service it will be such a joy. They have a winner here. Sometimes I am very happy with my adsl connection…fast, stable etc. But some days, especially in the beginning of the month, any apps using prioritized ports become unusable. Even surfing is slow. We are fighting this.
I am certain you will have more joy than woes from your connection, and please let us know what you think about it.

After installation feedback.
My browsing is lightning fast. As apposed to my extremely slow browsing with satellite. So I'm thrilled about this.
Downloading from tucows.co.za - average 50kB/sec
Downloading from tucows.com - average 23kB/sec
So far I'm extremely impressed, but I am waiting for rush hour on Monday to see the true test. If it can hold up during a week day, I'll count my blessings and be very happy.
Will be holding thumbs.
I know how you feel.
In my first month, I was cruising nicely. The problems only started in the second month.
Today it has generally been very good. Telkom does have good days too.

I have also been with WOL Satellite for a year and a half before ending my contract due to numerous problems. I am considering ADSL but after reading this forum I am not so sure anymore that it is a beter service than satellite. Glad I found this website after reading an article in Die Burger on Friday.
Oh well, back to standerd 56 K modem, this is Africa....

I can understand how you feel. I was really worried after reading the forum, but I felt that I needed to take the chance. And so far I'm really glad I did. I'm more than satisfied with the service thus far. I'm sure it'll have it's slow times, but I'm hoping I'll be one of the lucky ones. (That'll be a first [:)])
I guess it all depends on what you need the service for. If it's for downloads - I don't think it'll be worth it. If you use it for work and it's necessary, I say give it a go. You might be one of the lucky ones.
I don't think it could be as bad as WOL satellite though!
Good luck with your decision.
I thought that i would get playable pings to bnet b4 reaching the cap
i also thought the cap wouldnt be sooooo terible
The reason ppl r unhappy witht the cap is that the net is literally slower than a 9600 Modem

I very much doubt ANYone is happy with the cap, I'm certainly not happy with it. I've gone from downloading large amounts every single night and all weekend to nothing at all - talk about going cold turkey.
The only ones who don't mind the cap are those who probably only check their email and surf the web. Then I don't quite understand the need for an ADSL connection.
It's frustrating. You have the speed (well, some do), you have the time but you have to do it with your hands tied behind your back - doesn't make sense to me! Then again, Telkom never has made any sense to me.
Lets just hope that if enough of us kick up a fuss, something will be done about it.
