I received an e-mail today from Tiscali offering bandwidth
to there subscribers above the 3GB cap of Telkom

The e-mail is available on request.

Here is the insert from the mail:
ADSL PLUG IN
To assist ADSL users who need the extra capacity to carry them through the month, should they reach the initial 3GB cap imposed by Telkom, Tiscali have introduced the ADSL Plug In.

All existing Tiscali ADSL subscribers can purchase the top-up option in increments of 3GB for a fee of R250 per month per additional 3GB. To find out more call the Tiscali Sales Helpdesk on 0860 00 56 56 or email [email protected]

Prehaps I am missing the point here...but to me this sounds like just buying another account and paying more money...I mean what happens after you get used to 6 gigs...then another account..then another?

How many of you actually find it value for money ?

Hmmm on that thought I wonder if this is what Telkom meant as a another ADSL product to cater for higher volume users.

I may be intrested if it was something reasonable...like R50 / 2 gigs and you could decide how many gigs you wanted..like prepaid gig-age :P

That idea and enhance the capped speed to at least capable to delivering a speed equal or better than a 64K ISDN and I will be happy to wait for better days :P

Well hey...why not save R1 and get multiple accounts from Imaginet. I am sure they wouldnt mind people getting multiple accounts. The least Tiscali could have done is make it a little more competitive.

O come now Tiscali, I think some people think that the online gaming community are bunch of dumb asses, FFS give me a break, what so good about that I ask ?anyone can go and buy an extra account in fact I can sign up with Telkom on a prolog package which is cheaper than Tiscali anyway and just buy another account. That ain't no solution!!!! yet again the fat cats trying to make a fast buck from the folk that don't know any better!!!!! I remember seeing a post somewhere where you could actually buy extra bandwidth (per 1gig) for something like $10.....

To semi compete on ISDN rates (same type of bandwidth), MegaLAN offers 64k VPN services at R199, and 128k VPN services at R350.

We know from personal testing and experience, whatever QoS Telkom enforces are on border routers - i.e. NOT local. From our personal tests as well, we have found VPN channels to work pretty decently, provided that the gateway is in fact in South Africa, and therefore not affected by Telkom's profiling.

Depending on how many subs (and how quickly0 we get them, we may open up a test account to the public that will automatically disconnect in 10 minutes or so.

Just something to consider / keep in mind.

Buying extra bandwidth is going to sting... getting expensive [V]

This is shamefull from Tiscali! For once i agree with paybacks.
Anyone can buy a 2nd account, and most definetly at a MUCH cheaper
rate than R250!

I lose all respect for ISP's punting ADSL, i was actually bothered
by their banner add on thr prophecy forum, SUPER FAST INTERNET...
blabla. and on their site, they advertise it as the perfect
solution for a power user. Which its most definetly not.
