Well I have decided to go the linux root, am currently busy with linux redhat training, so atleast I will know what to type, but so far I have to say : I LIKE IT!!
Now if only I can find a dvd ripper, that does not need 750 other programs to be installed first, I will be in bliss.
oh and if anyone knows of a good news reader program (gui based, please people I am just starting here), would be greatly appreciated

Cant help you with RPMs and Redhat, but if you use Ubuntu:

(you might find be able to find the same apps on RH)
I am currently downloading fedora 9, but everyone says ubuntu, am I going to be kicking myself in a month or so?
I saw that little app though, looks very nice, also saw k9copy, but comming from a windows side, all the reading it hurting my head, where is the button to do everything!!!!!

Ubuntu is really really nice because of its massive support base.

I just get the feeling that Linux adoption will eventually reach a saturation point. Some time soon, by the looks of things...
Let's face it: Joe Average, his wife and their 8 year-old daughter/son is not able to use Linux. It's an OS that is aimed at tech-savvy people that have the patience and time to learn how to use something that is essentially just a micro-kernel running hundreds of plug-ins. And getting these plug-ins and their respective dependency libraries to work together is just not fun.
Not to mention the fact that Ubuntu (the most popular flavour atm) is essentially useless if you don't have a broadband connection...
Just my 2c.

Well I feel that an OS is a personal choice, you go with what makes you feel comfortable, and nothing wrong with that, I went on this redhat training course, because more and more companies run datastage on aix or linux, and have never had any unix training (yes yes puritans, I know linux is not 100% unix), and from what I have learned, I love the OS, I know I will shake my fist at it and swear, and spite it by booting back into windows, but I want to get proficient in it, the scripting is amazing
You have no idea about what you are talking about. The info you are quoting is years outta date. Grandmothers now use linux. While you have being sleeping it evolved.
Get the DVD then instead of the cd... this is not rocket science... wait.. it might be for you. nm.

Do yourselves a favour, open up Adept Package Manager, search for whatever it is you are looking for, and mark it to install. Once it is done, go to the K Menu (or whatever Gnome's crappy excuse for a Menu is
) and there the new application will be, like magic. Or, if you are feeling even more lazy:
sudo apt-get install application
I mean come on, could it possibly be any easier than that?
Let us do a comparison between installing Firefox on Windows, and installing it on Kubuntu:
Windows:
Open Internet Explorer
Go to the url http://www.getfirefox.com
Click on the Windows download
Select the directory in which you would like to download it
Wait for the download to finish
Double-click the downloaded installer file
Click Next a bunch of times and select where to install it
Click Finish
Open Firefox
Kubuntu:
Open terminal console
Type "sudo apt-get install firefox"
Type in your password
Wait for the download and install to finish (faster because it is downloading locally)
Open Firefox
...
So which is more complicated again?

fedora has an excellent support base at forum.fedoraforum.org. I have been using Fedora since version 4 and am very happy with it. Currently running a mythbox (F8 32-bit) and one of the Linux installs on my main box is F8 64-bit. I also run Debian 32-bit and Sidux 64-bit.

what killadoob and arf shoudl be looking at is whether the growth itself has increased by a substantial amount. That is what the story is about. Is there greater take up of Linux by users? And is it by larger numbers than previously.

But sensationalist and misleading. When the base is small (or tiny, in the case of Linux), massive percentage growth is easy to achieve but doesn't reflect the real situation.
Linux is still a niche product on the desktop... and that is factually correct.
Disclaimer: I'm not anti-Linux, or pro Windows by any means, but I have an issue with misuse of statistics to distort the truth.
Perhaps, but it is a start. This at least shows that more people are indeed starting to run Linux.
