Put it all here..each time a new article pops up about stadia that will never be finished, no transport system in place, bribes, corruption and even if you just feel like blaming 2010 for your bad day. Go ahead do it right here, rather than create a new thread each time 2010 faces a challenge big or small. personally i had a bad day at uct today, its all 2010's fault.

2009 Confed Cup claims ‘unsound’

The 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee has moved to rubbish rumours that the 2009 Confederations Cup to take place in June next year may be cancelled.
A column that appeared on the English Guardian.co.uk website had claimed, amongst other things, that the tournament is in jeopardy, but failed to substantiate why.

Fifa Director of Communication, Andreas Herren, has, however, moved swiftly to allay fears, claiming that the Confederations Cup would definitely go ahead as planned and described claims in the column as “unsound and having no relation to the facts”.

Indeed, a Fifa delegation is in the country this week to inspect venues for the tournament, while just last month the world governing body announced the schedule and prize-money for the event.

The winner will receive US$3.75-million (R30-million), with US$3.25 million (R26-million) going to the runner-up.

The only venue that may not be ready for the tournament is Port Elizabeth, but this would still leave Loftus Versfeld (Tshwane), Ellis Park (Johannesburg), Vodacom Park (Bloemfontein) and the Royal Ba***eng Stadium (Rustenburg) as hosts.

A decision around Port Elizabeth will be made on April 29, according to Fifa.

The tournament draw is scheduled for November 22 in Johannesburg.

2010 transport projects keep up the pace, says report

Most of the city's transport projects needed to support 2010 World Cup venues in Cape Town, including the Klipfontein and Koeberg transport corridors and the development of a 3 000-vehicle parking bay near Green Point stadium, are going full steam ahead, according to the city's World Cup progress report .

On the Klipfontein corridor, conceptual planning has been completed with the Khayelitsha, Athlone and Mowbray phases already under construction.

Preliminary designs for the first phase of the Koeberg public transport corridor are expected by the end of April.

Designs for the Cape Town Station upgrade for 2010 were also made public yesterday.

Intersite Property Management Services has developed conceptual proposals for how the station should function for 2010 and beyond. They have initiated a public participation process to inform stakeholders of the proposals and give them a chance to comment.

"The proposals plan to give the existing station a facelift. Key proposed changes include proposals to move the long distance bus operators to a new location on the Old Marine Drive edge of the station.

"The city concourse will be opened up with doors on the Adderley Street side to allow easy movement through the area.

"The upgrades will create a large number of retail opportunities for both formal tenants and informal traders," said the company.

Lindelo Matya, Intersite's regional manager, said "these proposals should be celebrated as such initiatives deliver on the promise that the 2010 World Cup event will have a positive legacy for the city".
 
Pretoria's Loftus Versfeld stadium ready for 2010 by October 2008


Loftus Versfeld is set to undergo a multi-million rand facelift, including a roof over the east stand of the stadium in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. It is believed that it could become a bearer for all stadiums for the tournament. Construction work is underway throughout the country with five stadia being built while five others are undergoing renovations.

Upgrade work at the 45 000 seater Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane will begin soon. The stadium will also host the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. Officials say it will be complete by October 2008. The stadium was named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, the founder of organised sports in Tshwane, and was first used for sports in 1906.

The stadium needs minimal upgrading to qualify as a venue for the 2010 matches. These include a massive roof on the eastern stand to help the stadium meet FIFA's requirements in terms of floodlighting, all the seats need to be replaced, the media centre needs to be upgraded, as well as food and drinks kiosks.

Construction of new hotels

The city says it has received a number of proposals for the construction of new hotels. It's also working with the hospitality industry to ensure that there is adequate accommodation for fans during the cup. The municipality has also replaced old buses with new ones and it is expected that there should be about 300 busses available to boost the transport system during the Soccer World Cup.

The city will also refurbish the Wonderboom Airport to help alleviate the heavy inflow at the OR Tambo international and Lanseria airports. Another aspect is the importance of public viewing spaces and fanparks. It is expected that they could draw more than one million visitors to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, whether or not they have tickets for tournament matches.

The city says only one fanpark has been identified thus far. Subesh Pillay, from the political committee for 2010 in Tshwane, says: “We've already identified the venue that is awaiting FIFA approval now. We are looking at the Tshwane showgrounds as the main fanpark. and then we've identified five public viewing sites which would be in each of the city's regions. One will be in Atteridgeville, Hammanskraal, Soshanguve, Mamelodi and Centurion.”

Another question: the country's roads infrastructure is falling apart. Does the LOC have plans to suggest to the government and Minister of Transport to fix the broken roads for 2010 transport? They'd better. German tourist will not be happy if his rented car breaks an axle on a pothole the size of any yaysayer's optimism.

If he does, that is going to cost him some serious cash to get out of his contract.

The report by DPA quotes Leila Parreira as saying her husband was negotiating his exit, and that he would return home to Brazil in early May.

She said he missed his family and would be resigning for personal reasons. - Sapa
