Thats a MMORPG isn't it?

Speaking of MMORP games, has anyone tried out any others and found them to work over ADSL?

For those who like MMORPGs

I discovered Project Entropia -> free download, free play (no monthly costs), realy kewl game ... and if u join up, look me up (Xyber) :) then we start a South African society in the game.
http://www.project-entropia.com/

If any1 want I could prolly cut you a CD so you wont have to trash your precious 3Gb as the game will take about 600Mb thereof :/
Email Xyber (darkhighlander@webmail.co.za)

Do any1 know of other free MMO games?

I play Star Wars Galaxies on my ADSL, at least I did before I was capped, works quite well if you play after business hours. During the day there is too much packet loss and spiking of your latency to do anything usefull. Same can be said for Everquest.

No payment, Entropia developers makes money from people whol buy PED from them $1 = 10PED (PED = Project Entropia Dollars or something like that)

You need PED to buy weapons, armor, ect as you start out with nothing but the cloths on your back - which you can't sell buy the way :(

Anyase, the game can be fun without buying PEd from the developers, and there are ways o get it too ... I got my first 10PED by standing near an oil pump in a PvP area that has a LOAD of big monsters - this pump dumps barrels every now and then - but beware the beasts :p I was lucky to score one just before an Atrox got me (you turn into a ghost when u die and can "respawn" at certain terminals)

Anycase, another way to make some PED is to join up with other payers that has gund and who wanna hunt - you go be the bait while they shoot at whatever chases you and you share in the findings.

yo yo.. wasssup.. abt Project Entropia..
I know it sounds crazy... but wat u gotta do.. is just pay 10 USD and get 98 credits.. it makes such a difference ... and it really rawks.. once u have a gun and all..

there is a SA community up.. if ne1 wants 2 join.. atm it is callen generation X.. due 2 the fac that only gX members r part of it.. but if others would like 2 join they may.. and we can rename it..
so if u want 2 join.. its a Hunters Society.. and then search 4 generation u should find it[:p]

I played eve for about a month, got it 5 days after release, the server was mad unstable and there were patches like nothing else. After all of that settled down the game itself just started to get boring and the combat sucked (wish it was more like freelancers combat), but hey thats just me. I then moved onto Starwars Galaxies, havent looked back, its awesome.

With ADSL I get average pings of 700ms to the server I play on, but with ISDN I get a constant, stable ping of 288ms. Man I hate this ADSL, 4 days and already hit my cap :(

I play Dark Age of Camelot online, normal ADSL is totally useless, even uncapped. I have a VPN connection to an alternate source that gives me consistant latency (ping) and no port priortisation.

Hey Dark, there are quite a few of us playing SWG, got to meta-corp.org, mostly SA peeps. And yes, after hours gaming is great on SWG :-)

hi
Started playing MMORPG's about 5 to 6 years ago, was on dialup at that time, as soon as i could i switched to ISDN and i was actually good for a while, but again the service degraded so much as time went on that i eventually had a few ISP accounts from different ISP's and would switch to the one that was giving me the best performance. I finally got ADSL in January 2003 and it was AWESOME, had less tan 350ms latency and almost 0 packet loss, Times were good and for the first time i could really play DAOC as it was supposed to be played, unfortunately the ADSL started to get clogged and it degraded massively. I can currently not stay connected for longer than 5 minutes during the Week before going LD, over the weekend it is still playable with about 2 seconds latency and 10% packet loss, not ideal but at least i dont go LD every 5 min. A friend of mine that also plays DAOC is still on ISDN (no ADSL in his area) during the week he has a gorgeous connection, has recorded ping times of 300ms to USA west cost, but from friday to sunday his connection goes MIA,(looks like if you want to play in the week you need ISDN and over weekends you need ADSL :))
I have run a few trace routes to the game servers, weird that when using ISDN you jump straight to NY from JHB but using ADSL we go via London, this JHB to London jump adds about 300 ms to my lag meaning that the best ping times to USA with ADSL is slower than the best Ping times with ISDN, has anyone else noticed this?

No, there aren't SA servers. Having a completely separate gaming world for South Africa would be pointless, and I think the high international latencies involved would complicated having the servers linked to the "rest of the servers". I don't think it would be that bad playing EVE internationally with MyWireless though. It's quite low bandwidth, and it's not as latency-sensisitive as a first-person shooter (although high latencies still suck).

Hmm... as far as the beta goes... I think they were running the servers in Iceland for most of the beta period; they only installed servers in England towards the end.

Wonder why they tested it in iceland prbly overclocked the poor servers to handle the load and every hour when they overheated just put em on the closest iceberg
.
so eve is kinda out cause i hate playing a online game with high latencies
what local mmorpg are playing here in sa i wonder?

You don't notice the latency in EVE all that much, depending on what you're doing; if you're just flying around, or buying stuff, or whatever, then the fact that your operations only ACTUALLY take effect 500ms latency is not something you notice. You're at a disadvantage in combat, though.

As far as Iceland goes, that's quite simple; the EVE developers (CCP) are located in Iceland.

08/21/2003 - That is when I started this thread - LOL

I totally forgot about it, I am still playing Eve (have 6 accounts in the house) we run 4 simultaneously over ADSL - My MyWireless now has a patch antennae (which I bought in the hope that it works) and it gives me 1% signal - LOL

Will fiddle with the antennae a bit more tomorrow, but to you Eve players out there in SA contact me... My details are here or contact me ingame (I am CEO of Carbide Industries and Content Manager at www.eve-i.com)
