I installed Kubuntu 8.04 on a VM and I must say, so far its been one disaster after the other. Kubuntu 7.10 worked just fine.

Attempt #1: Set VMware resolution to desired 1024x768

Installed fine, but stuck at 800x600. Can't change it. Restarted, now I can change the resolution to 1024x768...but all the windows & fonts are still way to big and I can't see half the stuff. It's like they just scaled everything to 1024x768 instead of adding desktop space. I figured I'd just change the DPI settings and all would be well. Changing them in the GUI had no effect. So I figured I'll have a look at that xorg.conf file. Everything there is at 640x480. Right, so I change that and do some DPI calculations by hand. Obviously I did something wrong and it refused to boot next time round.

Attempt #2: Left VMWare display settings at default.

Install went fine...but the desktop is completely screwed. The location of the pointer and the button that is activated does not correlate. About 5cm difference, but this varies in both distance and angle.:( The desktop is smaller than the VM window, yet there are scrollbars that can scroll to fragments of the wallpaper. Half of the windows are now cut off at the side and bottom. If I change the VM to the desired resolution i.e. matching the resolution set in Kubuntu, then it doesn't boot.

Perhaps this would all not be a problem if I did a true HDD install, but after this experience, I'm sure as hell not attempting that.

In 7.10 I just changed the resolution and all was well. Now I can't see half the shyte and the rest of it I can't click because it is a guessing game where the "click" will actually land. How the hell is a noob like me supposed to learn linux like this?

I read somewhere that ubuntu's handling of dpi/resolution is better. Maybe I should switch to that...cause seeing wtf I'm doing is just not optional.

Are you using an Nvidia card? There have been a few complaints about 8.04 and the supplied (free) drivers. Try downloading the restricted drivers.

I had hassles with both 7.10 and 8.04(installed with wubi) on my one machine... could not get my multiple monitors to work. I suppose I should install it properly and give it a try...

I have had no problems with my VMware. However, I did a clean install. Upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy does create problems, especially with graphics cards. i even reinstalled gutsy and upgraded directly to Hardy (with no avail). The problems were sorted when i did a clean Hardy install.

OK. I got it fixed now. First changed Monitor type to the right type. Then changed then changed a line called Virtual in the xorg.conf that had a weird resolution in it. Quite a mission without a mouse and without knowing the Konsole commands.

Anyway, I still don't see how a noob is supposed to know this. In my case it was just a lucky guess that fixed it. But, yeah...apologies for the rant.

Grrr... Just fscked my desktop... installed Ubuntu 8.04 as a dual boot with XP... and now have a no boot. I get a Kernel panic on Ubuntu boot.

update: Fixed the mbr so I can at least boot into Windows, but now need to remove the linux partitions and start again.
