UK tightens visa regulations

London - Britain's Home Office tightened visa regulations for skilled workers on Tuesday, forcing employers to prove they had no option before hiring a foreigner.

Under the new rules, potential workers will also be judged on their age and their ability to speak English, and the amount of money they earn. Potential migrants earning more £24 000 a year would have a simpler time than those earning less.

"Our new points system means that British job seekers get the first crack of the whip and that only the skilled migrants we actually need will be able to come." said Liam Byrne, the immigration minister.

The new regulations are part of government attempts to limit levels of immigration and will affect thousands of computer programmers, lab technicians, midwives and other skilled labourers that come to work in Britain. Another set of rules that covers students and temporary workers will be announced later in the year.

It is part of a larger immigration measure meant to make Britain more selective in choosing whom it allows into the country. It is based on a similar Australian programme and was put into place in February.

Had the new regulations been in operation last year, the Home Office said 20 000 people would have not been allowed into the country. That figure represents about 10% of the workers who came to Britain from outside Europe.

The new rules will not affect the movement of people from within the European Union, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.

Eish .... having another passport is becoming more and more like having gold these days.

Amusing, since it's the 1,000,000 Polish labourers that came to the U.K. last year, meaning more Brits out of a job and on the dole.
 
New zealand is still pretty slack. Its still easy for saffas to arrive here on south african passports get a job and then a work visa. From there you can apply for your permanent residence. And the weather here beats the uk any day. Added to that nz has one of the lowest crime rate in the world. More murders in south africa in a day than all the murders in nz for a year. Guys it now because pretty soon nz will be following the same trend.
 
I heard that to fast track a work permit in Oz all you need to do is invest AU$ 500,000.00 into Oz government bonds.

Can anyone else confirm this. I think it was in Fin Week last week or two??
 
With the recession in the US, its actually not hard to get in there atm... expecially to destinations like New Orleans.
 
I got an ancestral visa if I ever wanted to duck to UK, so less of other people going there, the better. Not that I would look forward to going to UK, weather sucks.

I get more than enough points on my Australian work permit application if I wanted to go that way.

Well I can go to Germany or Namibia with no hassel.

But thinking of going the NZ route next year. I want my boy to play for a Rugby proud country and not a Political ball game :)

I've heard that the Polynesian chaps are taking over rugby in NZ because they developer much faster than the white school boys so I hope you have a tough little boy :D.

My friend is in England and he says the changes are not all that drastic. He just needed to prove that he had 800 pounds in a bank account for three months with each of his dependents having around 500 pounds. He's in under the highly skilled migrant programme, I think the changes for getting a work permit are more stringent ... they call it Tier 2 to the best of my knowledge (employer has to prove that he can't hire a local worker for the position etc.)
 
Interesting times.

For those who wanna get out, best get cracking. If you wanna get rid of you house, I know a few peeps who will take it of your hands cheap LOL.

Holland has similar immigration laws and has had for quite some time.

The unfortunate reality is that 1st world countries cannot afford to continue to allow the influx of people that they have in the past. Particularly in a country like Britain where space is a premium.

I'm in the process of organising a move to Ireland.
It's actually one of the less well known immigration options.
Their immigration laws are a little more lax then UK because they're trying to promote themselves as an immigration destination and they rate very high on a number of global survey's like the UN's HDI.
 
Emigration wouldn't ever be a problem for me or my kids . . . . might have to leave the missus behind though . . . :D
 
Ouch.. Lucky for me I never wanted to go to any of those places. Im thinking Japan / Eastern Europe.
