Whats the bandwidth on TVY (internet TV)

I dont have DSTV , so i watch some of my International sports using http://pages.tvunetworks.com/ this application allows me to view various international channels , the best being STAR SPORTS , to watch especially the Formula 1 - Its live , and its not too bad on quality.

with us poor South Africans , always on cap , how much of bandwidth does something like this use? say if i had to watch about 2hours worth ?

Im on 4MB ADSL with Telkom 3GIG cap.

I don't have DSTV either so I end up watching a lot of shows like Top Chef and Project Runway on YouTube.

I'm also on the 4MB ADSL with Telkom 3Gig Cap. It's difficult to give an exact number, but I've found that a 45min show divided into 5 segments normally takes up 100 - 150MB. Each 8-10min segment using around 20-25MB. Because these shows are segmented, they take up less bandwidth than watching a full 2 hours.

I'd hazard a guess that watching a full 2 hours of continuous stream would be around 250-350MB. The better the quality the more bandwidth you use as well.

If you have someone who has DSTV , you can use their details on http://www.dstvondemand.com/dstv_default.aspx and watch the current series if you need to , so with this in mind , i suppose uncapped is the way to go.

Who is Telkom kidding with 3GIG , seriously.... I hate TELKOM

It sounds like a lot, but if you take into consideration downloading a DivX movie that's around an hour and a half long and good quality at anything from 800MB to 1Gig+ then watching 2 hours of streaming sport at 300MB isn't that bad.

Unfortunately DSTV's on demand service doesn't offer a full spectrum of their shows, yet. So far it's just preselected shows. Does DSTV stream on local bandwidth?

Obviously Telkom has no idea about how much broadband it's customers need. I often find 500MB a day too little so that 3Gig cap arrives quicker and quicker every month. So far I use three Telkom 3Gig accounts a month plus three or four 1Gig Axxess vouchers.

In that regard I'm seriously considering Openweb's 30Gig VPN (Virtual Private Network) account for R749 a month. The account is also unshaped. Check it out on http://www.openweb.co.za/vpn_adsl.php

It's also going to be interesting to see what Neotel's R999 Prime Uncapped package will be like. It includes line rental so I think it's a bargain price if they can just get their multiple ethernet ports sorted for the device.

Let's just hope when Seacom launches next year the prices come down as promised!

Most of the p2p (sopcast/tvu/tv ants etc...) streams are around 200K+ Bit rate so that calculates to 88 MB for 60mins of viewing.
That is the minimum we also have to factor in that its p2p so you will be uploading as well as downloading which would increase the amount of bandwidth needed.

any chance of us viewing some DSTV channels on sopcast, ie: using local bandwith

Sopcast is not local, so no and the only dstv channel on is supersport.

i also watch online but i don't really take note of the bandwith because i have no cap...
