Sony Handycam & Windows MovieMaker

I have a Sony Handycam (one of those that record onto DVD). I can import the clips onto my PC in .mpg format. However, if I want to put it all together in Windows MovieMaker it only plays the sound without any video.

I've googled this and it seems to be a general problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.

I can transcode the clips in Nero and then edit it in WMM, but it takes a very long time and it means double transcoding the video.

Does anyone know of a solution to import Sony Handycam clips into Windows MovieMaker directly ?

Is there a special codec that I need ? (I already have KLite installed)

You should not need any codecs to import into Windows MovieMaker.

Are you using Vista or XP? The MovieMaker in Vista is a later version than the one in XP. You might want to check the Microsoft Website to see if there is an update to the XP version of MovieMaker.

What format is the handycam recording in? Is it DV?

There are a few other programs you might want to try.

Windows MediaCoder I think is free. It might do the initial conversion for you.

VirtualDUB is a free video importing and editing program.

and there is another free video editing program the name escapes me right now... I will look for you.

Thanks for the info.

The format on the handycam is *.MPG
I think it's Mpeg2 (according to some websites).

I'll check out the MediaCoder and VirtualDUB. (Turns out Prism doesn't work properly. Works pretty easy, but stuffs up the sound).

Using Windows XP Home.

Movie maker is a joke... Get a mac and use iMovie... Light years ahead of MovieMaker :)

Get some decent software - Pinnacle Studio 11 or Sony Vegas. Then there's Adobe Premiere Pro etc but these are all expensive. From there you can do whatever you want. You can also try the Roxio products.
